Hey everyone...
I'm a 24 year-old part-time (male) student trying to generally get in better shape. I'm about 5'9", 155 lb, and unsure of my body fat. I've always been relatively slim or skinny with a good metabolism, but I would rather at least get some muscle tone and feel better about myself. I've never been the athletic type - I played soccer for awhile as a kid but beyond that I never did much in the way of sports unless it was for fun with some friends. I've also never been to a gym or done much training with weights or machines.
Over the last year or two I've been running regularly, though on and off over that time. I have a slight OCD bent, so whenever I do anything I try to read up and plan it out ahead of time so I feel I'm doing it in the best possible way. I've tried to stay on a schedule of running about 2 miles a day and walking my dog about a half-mile before and after. Lately I've been able to do that about 4-5 days a week on average, and I think I'm doing well - I run around 2 miles in about 12-15 minutes.
Now that I've got that down, I'm hoping to incorporate some weight training or something for the rest of my body. I was trying to do some lifts using dumbbell weights, pushups, crunches, etc. but with no idea of how to go about it to get results and stay healthy/safe. For now I would rather put off going to a gym until I feel better about myself and feel that I can commit and not worry about wasting my money or quitting. I have a bike/walking path a few miles down the road but I run around my neighborhood instead. I was running in the morning, and I'm struggling with how to fit running and some other exercise into my schedule - my work is usually second shift. In the last few days I switched my running over to nights after I get home, and so I'm hoping to do some weight lifting or other exercise in the morning.
So I'm just hoping to improve and get in a routine that I can feel good about. With all the running, I've started getting concerned about weight loss as I've lost a waist size and apparently a few pounds. I had planned on just working on my abs and arms, but I would rather get the best well-rounded routine/program I can do. I've already looked around a bit, and I'm going to try and come up with a program to follow for now. I'm familiar with forums so it's just a matter of getting the right help and starting off.
Sorry for blabbing, hopefully someone skims it enough to get an idea of what I'm up to and maybe offer some advice.
Thanks,
Jimmy
