if I weigh 180 lbs and my bodyfat is 18% how much more fat do i need to lose to get to 9%? Is it as simple as figuring
18% of 180= 32.4 lbs / 2? 16.2 lbs? or because my weight is decreasing it would be a different formula?

If you weigh 180 lbs now and are 18% bf, that means you're carrying 157.5 pounds of lean and 32.5 pounds of fat.

So if you wanted to get to 9% bf, that would simply be half of what you have now - 16 lbs or so.

But I think what you're really asking is if I weigh 180 lbs now and am 18% bf, how much would I weigh if I dropped my bf to 9%?

In that case, the formula is: Target Weight = LBM (lean body mass) divided by (1 - desired body fat as a decimal).

In other words, 157.5 divided by 1 - .09 = 173 lbs.

What that's saying is if you train and eat properly, and lower your bf to the 9% range, your body weight should be close to 173 lbs.

Hmmm… I would start the same way as You …
18%*180lbs =32.4lbs - that is the weight of your fat
Now we have to find out what your LBM is :
LBM=180-32.4=147.6lbs
Then assuming that LBM=constant
147.6(LBM) + 9%*147.6(9%BF)=160.9lbs (RJAZ520 ;))
So to get to 9%BF you would have to lose about 19lbs .

But from what I’ve read here it’s impossible to lose only fat. You will always lose some mussels with it. I don’t know exactly how much for each lb …

Even though this calculation is wrong I had real fun thinking about it – thanks :D

PS
Good luck with that last 0.8lb !!!! :)

Of course, the above calculations were simply an exercise in mathematics.

Getting down to single digit bf levels is not easy - and not desirable for the average person.

Unless you were a well conditioned athlete you'd likely lose a great deal of muscle if you tried this by dieting alone.

Even a well muscled person would lose some lbm getting to single digits.

But the flip side is, the illusion of chiseled muscle would make you'd look larger. :)

oh... i'm far from the average dieter :)

Im very calculated track everything i eat. Train very hard and very heavy to counteract muscle loss.

I have had some great guidance from Steve on how to best preserve muscle.

I realize some muscle loss is going to happen. But im doing everything i can to keep it very minimal.

I have the mentality, desirre, and dedication of an elite athlete. Just workin on getting my body there :)
