Help with hands and knees (?!)

Hi all. Wasn't sure where to post this so thought I'd try here first.

I've been scouring the internet to try and find answers to my specific problems, but not having much luck.

1. I have noticed a particular problem with my hands since restarting use of my elliptical cross trainer a few months back. I do 30 mins on a cross trainer about 4 times a week, and I noticed that my hands were beefing up a bit! Has anyone else noticed this and is it normal? I really hate it as I've always been told I've got great hands, slender fingers etc, so I was horrified to see they were getting a bit wider (palms). Is this because of the push and pull action? Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening? I love my cross trainer but don't love the problem it's given me.

2. Second problem, which I've always had. The inside of my knees remain untoned no matter what I do, making my legs look like tree trunks (you know what I mean!) The exercise I do regularly is use my elliptical cross trainer at home 4 times a week (every other day) and I do squats, lunges and hip extensions with dumbbells every other day as well (this is mainly to tone up my backside!). I'd really like an exercise I can do at home that will tone my knees up so that my legs are more streamlined. Can anyone help? I should say now that I don't have much time on my hands and I hate going to the gym! Thanks whoever can help.
