Help - Thickening Neck

I weight train about 3 - 4 times a week. My neck is getting thicker and thicker, even though I don't do specific neck exercises. It's gotten to the point that it impedes my ab workouts (neck muscles literally pop out on the sides and hits my jaw). Anyone else have a similar problem like this and what have you done to stop you neck from getting thicker

If you're not doing tons of neck exercises, I would assume that you are using your shoulders and neck on a lot of exercises. For example, if you're doing a lat pull-down, you should only be using your lats. Your shoulders are just a guide. You may find yourself using your shoulders a lot on difficult sets towards the end. This may build the muscle up by your neck, giving the appearance of a wider neck. Focus on using the muscles targetted for the exercise and not helping with that area. If the reps get too hard to finish with clean form towards the end, cut them off.

If you are using impeccable form and are just getting a large neck, perhaps someone else can give you some advice! :) But when I notice my neck getting bigger, usually it means I have to be more vigilant on form.

also, if you don't want your neck to bulk up, stop doing shoulder shrugs if you do those...focus more of your attention on the lower back or other parts of your upper body.
