Help - New and a lot to lose

Hi All

I am new to this forum, so excuse me if i'm not posting in the correct place etc.

I have just started at local gym but i need a bit of help putting some kind of routine together, i have a lot of weight to lose (6-7st) but i'm not quite sure what way to go about it.

The machines are X-trainer, treadmill, bike, rowing machine, hill walking machine, there is also the resistance weights, ball etc. Also there is a spinning class each evening.

I am looking for some help put together a routine that will last 1 1/2 hrs, and burn off a good bit of calories.

Would be really grateful if someone can point me in the right direction, so i don't feel so lost when i'm there lol

Thanks in advance

I see from your location you're also in the United Kingdom.

Is it one of the larger chain gyms that you have joined such as L.A Fitness, Total Fitness, Fitness First etc?

If so they will offer an induction session and write you a program to get you started. Most of the big chains do have fitness advisors. It's not quite a full personal trainer service, but is often free.

They will give you a program then review with you every so many weeks.

L.A fitness are particularly good for this and they offer a lot of free advice etc.

If it's a smaller gym there will usually be people willing to offer free advice, but you may have to pay to have a program written and be shown how to do the exercises.

I don't want to assume anything about your situation etc, but if you are new to working out and eating right you just need to get moving every day and cut the junk from your diet to start seeing results.

If you are overweight at the moment you will want to be careful starting out and not push it too hard, whilst still challenging yourself. It's important to get the right balance so that you don't burn yourself out too quickly and lose motivation.

Hey Dan,

I am in Northern Ireland and its not a chain gym, just a small local gym, i am just new to it and wasn't sure whether to ask or not for a programme to be devised, i can manage to work at it all myself if i had a programme to work from, you know something like which machine to start on and how long to do.

I have lost 2 stone so far by just eating healthy and out walking, but i want to be able to tone up aswell and increase fitness and stamina, as i don't want to be left with a lot of extra skin when i get down a few sizes.

I am going tonight so i will ask the fella there if he can devise me up some kind of programme to work from, i have the motivation and will power, just need a push in the right direction lol

Thanks

I would try super-sets or something like that. Meaning that instead of working in a session my chest and biceps or something like that I'd work all major muscle groups using relatively low weights and with no rest between exercises. There are tons of video materials on the internet on how to loose weight or gym programs. Your main focus I think is to raise your heart rate in the cardio zone while using weights and treadmills and stuff like that not power lifting or the boring sets of 8.

Just my 2 cents. But I'm not a fitness instructor.

Geez I feel the need to say this in every post :)

Hey thanks for that ill try it, i went to gym last night and stuck to cardio for 1 hour, done 20 mins on treadmill, 20 mins on bike, 10 mins on x-trainer, and 10 minutes on hill climber, then done 1/2 hour after with the exercise ball for stomach and small dumbells for tricepts.
So hopefully keep that up and improve each week :)
Thanks for your help
