Help me with a birthday spluge decision...

Hi, all. My birthday is coming up on Friday, and I really want to splurge. However, I've been thinking about it, and I wonder if it's really worth it...But then, I really would like to be able to go out to a restaurant and eat whatever I want with a piece of cake after dinner with hubby. But probably the dinner alone would be over a thousand calories, and the cake would be sending it over the top, not to mention the other calories I take in for Breakfast and lunch. Am I being to obsessive, or am I right to be cautious? I've been heavy for a few years, and I'm really frustrated with myself. On the flip side, I have been very good for the course of this diet so far, and I have lost some weight. Will I mess it all up? I guess I would just like some comfort, and some advice. I want to be able to have a little fun on my big 21st! Thanks, all.

Here's the way I look at it: do it once, it's easier to do it again. Make your birthday a defining moment. Just because it's a day of celebration doesn't mean you have to do something that you know is hurting your body. Order a salad and start a new chapter, not on the wrong foot!

you are being obsessive :D

How much have oyu lost to date -how much effort have you put in? do you really think that one day is going to undo all that? if it is - you really need to reevaluate whether you're doing a lifestyle change or a short term the results will never last diet...

Into every life birthdays fall - enjoy it - get over it and move on the next meal...

It's one meal, it's a celebration of your life, ENJOY IT! Whatever that means. If you think you'd enjoy it more by having a salad, have a salad. If you think a delicious meal with a big slice of cake would be more enjoyable, then have that.

After you've had your celebration, then get back on track :)

Thanks guys, I'm feeling less apprehensive about it now. I've realized, after re-reading my own post, that I am getting a little obsessive. What I can do, is practice both of the two opinions I've gotten to some extent: have fun, but be cautious. So, we can go out to a nice restaurant, but order something that I'll feel better about. Really, going out on my birthday isn't so much about the food, and I need to learn to enjoy going out without buying the worst darned thing on the menu. Then, I think I'll have a slice of cake, but a small one.
Thank you for the opinions expressed.

I've been trying to change my eating habits since the beginning of October. I've lost 6 pounds, through making myself eat proper portions and controlling my calorie intake, plus exercise. I am really proud of myself for finally taking the dive, and I know I'm not going to gain all six pounds back by one night of having a little fun in moderation, I think.

You certainly won't gain anything back from that one night. It sounds as if you are on the right track - enjoy, but in moderation. Nobody says you can't eat a piece of cake - just not the whole thing. One piece is not going to do you any harm. Just go out, enjoy, and then get back on track the next day.

Can't have a birthday without some cake! :)

if you are close to goal weight, or have made considerable progress, I say GO FOR IT!!! But if you're just starting your diet that's a set up for disaster if you go ALL OUT! hahah I seriuosly dieted for 6 months straight, only having one splurge, of one item, every two weeks, if even.

I hope you have fun!
