Help Me Make 2010 The Best Yet!

I'm going to keep the intro as short as possible to limit the wall of text people have to deal with as best I can. ;)

I'm 6'2" and I've pretty much been overweight my whole life. As of 1/1/10 I weighed 299lbs (though my heaviest in the past was around 350) and my goal this year is to get to 200lbs by New Years Eve. I am currently 28 and just starting college (late bloomer). I seem to be having some difficulties and I came across this site and thought I could get some assistance! :)

I started the first couple weeks of the year by changing eating habits. I cut all sweets, fast food, and bad snacking. I dropped to 292 just before coming to school on 1/15, so far so good.

I started using the elliptical machines right away and I've gone from being able to do about 15 minutes on an elliptical to over 2 hours. I even watched the Super Bowl from the 2nd quarter on while cranking away on the elliptical instead of just sitting on my duff. I also try to use some of the weight machines, but to be honest I haven't been as diligent with that.

While I feel much stronger, and don't break into a sweat just looking at a flight of stairs anymore, I have been slowly gaining weight these last few weeks. I am currently at 296 and it's frustrating the crap out of me because I've been busting my butt at the gym. I started tracking my calories on 1/31 and I don't think I'm eating too many at all. Maybe I'm off base though.

According to the BMR calculator on this site my BMR is 2659.48. I've also been walking a lot more than normal in addition to my workouts (this is quite a large campus) including walking home from the gym each night which is an additional 1.5 miles. By that count I should be dropping lbs too fast I think, but I'm afraid to eat more because I don't want to start gaining even more. At the same time, I've noticed my calorie intake increasing some the last few days, in part because I have been extremely tired lately and I thought I might not be eating enough.

In addition, my numbers are so varied because I try to eat when I'm hungry and I also try to mix it up to confuse my body which I've heard is a helpful thing to do, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Please let me know what I can do to get my metabolism running in the correct direction! :) Also, are my mini goals reasonable goals at this point or should I be looking to restructure them?

Thanks in advance to you all for this site and your help! I plan to keep this updated as often as possible so follow me on my weight loss adventure! :)

Hi and welcome!

I'm a newbie on here too, i just joined a few days ago.
I am not an expert, but i do know that when your body is building muscle you tend to gain weight and ALOT of people don't understand when their also busting their behinds! :) If i remember correctly, keep going at it and it will balance out very soon!
Keep it up!!!

Thanks for the response Tacha! You know, part of me felt like I just needed to say something about it on here for it to start kicking in... and sure enough today I was down to 293! :)

Unfortunately I did not make it to the gym today, but I will definitely get there tomorrow. I used the weights a lot yesterday and I can still feel it today, so it may have been good to take a day off anyway. I still walked all over campus going to classes though so I at least got something in.

Well, I lost another pound today (woot!) but I also was really really tired all day. I think I need to be consuming more calories, but I need to spread them out better over the day. I'm going to be working on that tomorrow.

At least I made it to the gym today, and I can do resistance 8 on the elliptical for an hour straight now! I even upped it to 12 at one point but I was only able to do that for about 4 minutes or so. I also decided to run full speed and see how far I could get on my walk home and I made it a full block, which is huge for me! My legs felt strong, like they could go on much much longer... unfortunately my lungs not so much. If anyone has tips on increasing lung ability I would really appreciate it. :)

Was feeling very fatigued again today, still made it to work out though. I also began taking a Multivitamin and some extra D-3 also. Unfortunately my wild weight fluctuations continued and I'm back up to 295. :p

Ugh, didn't make it to the gym today because I had a pain in my right big toe that was killing me when I walked on it. Turns out I had a blister under there, which I realized when it popped tonight. Hopefully it's feeling better tomorrow.
