Help me lose 3-4 lbs a month

I need to lose 3-4 pounds at a minimum a month. I'm in the army, I'm deployed so I can't eat as healthy as I should. My main goal is to weigh 150. I am 5' 7" and I weigh about 185. I've been in for 3.5 years and ever since I got to this unit they have been threatening to kick me out for my weight. My contract ends late next year and I want to see to it until the end. I'd rather finish what I signed up for. Most people think that being in the military will put you in great shape but that's a myth. A lot of people are big in every branch but somehow manage to stay in. I'd like some tips or ideas on how I can do this. I'm open to anything honestly.

don't know enough about army life to make any solid recommendations but i'll try.

food: do you get a choice in what you eat or is everyone given the same things in the same amounts? try to recognize the calorie dense components and have less of it (breaded or battered anything, sauces, animal fats, deserts, sugar, breads etc.) increase your veg intake if you can. experiment a little until you find the right amount for you.

Exercise: try to start doing cardio 1/2 an hour 5 times a week if you can, an hour tops. Presuming you don't have exercise equipment I'd suggest either jogging (flights of stairs would be ideal) or if you can find a length of cord, skipping (if it's good enough for boxers....)

also start doing bodyweight training 3 times a week. pushups, situps, chin ups, squats, you could probably find something to use for dumbbell exercises too.

4lb a month is reasonable if you keep at it

Sorry, I have to disagree about having to cut entire food groups from your diet. You can eat wheat and sugar just fine. It's all about the calorie intake. The reason one loses weight on these diets is they reduce their calorie intake.

Ah, Actually, I've done quite a bit of research. Most of those books you listed has been debated and picked apart. We have seen the video and debated it as well. You are not the first to bring this here. The critics will point out the data in inefficient and I'm sure we can do a nice little dance about this or you can use the forum search options and see what already was said about it.

However, a suggestion. You are a new member here. We, as a community, don't even know you and yet here you are pointing at me and saying I have no idea what I'm talking about. If you disagree, then let's talk but you won't win any friends if you come here as a new person like you own the room.

But science is science and the number of calories you need to exist is one number and the amount you take into the body is another. If A is more than B, then the body has to get the energy from someplace. The only way is from the body itself.

science is science

Science is not just science, but also politics. Take for instance the recommended food pyramid, which is a concoction collaborated by the many lobbyist boards from around the nation. The pig, beef, poultry, sugar, wheat, soybean, corn, etc lobby groups. The recommended intake of food is nothing more than politics and nothing to do with science. Check Marion Nestle's book on Food Politics

Professor J - The problem of weight is not a two dimensional issue. People don't get fat from just eating too many calories and not enough exercise. This is two dimensional thinking. What about the genetically modified foods that act as foreign substances in the body, making them more difficult to process. All corn, wheat and soy are genetically modified. What about the pesticides that are sprayed on the foods we eat that when in the body's system reek havok on the body's functioning. What about the fact that all foods grown today are nutrient deficient - only grown with potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus. What about the other minerals that are needed for proper body functioning. Don't forget about the thousands of additives in foods like aspartame, msg, high fructose corn syrup and others. Then, there is the spraying of chemicals in the air like barium, aluminum and others. Oh, let's not forget the water additives like fluoride which is mixed with radioactive materials.

So you can point out all the medical literature which has been funded by the mega corporations (big Pharma) at their funded Universities, published in their owned magazines and journals and say that science is just science. You can go on deluding yourself as long as you want. Nearly 800,000 people die as a result of the Medical Mafia each year according to Dr. Carolyn Dean in her book Death By Modern Medicine.

Well PWillows, we will disagree then rather than making a massive explosive debate on ideas, politics and theory between mods.
