Help me convince my dad to lose weight.

My dad is 58 with diabetes. He probably weighs about 230 right now, he used to be 240 before he started weight watchers (he was about 195lbs and looked/felt great at his peak). After he hit that weight, however, he just started gaining weight and stopped going regularly. The fact that he's diabetic, combined with the fact that he's overweight isn't helping his health, he complains of a lot of small things related to his condition.

To put his medical history bluntly, he used to be a big body builder. Then one day he stopped, got fat, and was diagnosed with diabetes.

My mom and my brother, who is a pharmacist, keeps telling him to lose weight and he keeps ignoring them. I tell him to lose weight occasionally, but I don't persist, though I think I'm about to. I don't think it's hopeless at all, he just needs a rude awakening.

Can anyone help me? Honestly, I think if he just stayed in better shape and watched what he ate, he could live significantly longer. But I'm no doctor.

you cannot make someone else lose weight, it's someting theyhave to do for themselves.

youcan encourage healthy eating habits and not have the stuff he shouldn't have in the house, but nagging won't work...

JM, I think Mal said it best. YOu cannot MAKE him lose weight - he needs to want to do this for himself and his health not b/c people tell him to. I think too many "nagging" him about it will only increase his resistance to the idea.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
as Mal said, encourage healthy eating and leave junk out of the house - yes, he may go buy it, but it gets him up and moving and usually if it takes more to get, the idea is given up all together
"hey, Dad, I'm going for a walk, wanna come?"
"Dad, do you want a chef salad with me?"

just make it a point to try to include him in your healthy habits - DON'T press if declined but keep offering the option to him..
Hope this helps :D
