Okay, first off ,Hello =] I'm new here.Well,I've been reading alot but now I decided to post to ask for some help.
I'm a 16 year old girl.I'm 5'2' and weight about 110 pounds depending on how much I eat or drink. I cannot say I'm fat but I'm a bit plump at the thighs and my body pretty much has no shape at all. I want to lose from 8 to 10 pounds to slim down my thighs abit and tone my body.
I have tried to lose weight a couple of times before with dieting but with little success cause it was so hard not to eat but I haven't been really serious about it either. Now I really want to lose those extra pounds.I know that I'll look so much better with these off.
I want to know how can I do this through exercise and a calorie deficit. If anyone can help me with a good exercise plan besides cutting down on the extra fat and sugar which I started doing already. How many calories should I eat each day to lose weight and how should I divide meals (PS i go to school)
I have started using the elliptical machine at home for 30 mins 4 times last week and then doing 30 minutes cardio. Is jogging outside a good exercise?
I'm kinda clueless when it comes to exercise so I'd appreciate the advice.
Thank You.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Losing the last 10 pounds will be hard, but I wouldn't focus so much on the pounds. It sounds like you really want to tone up, and I think if you did that then the weight won't matter.

Cardio is really good for burning calories and you need to do cardio to lose fat. However you also need to do strength training to build muslce. A good exercise plan has both components.

So I would keep up the cardio that your doing but also add in strength training. If you're working out at home, you can just get a couple free weights or resistence bands and use that. Do that along with things like push ups, sit ups, squats, lunges, etc etc.

I'm sure online you'll be able to find different exercises you could do with either free weights or resistence bands. And if you do that, then I would focus on maybe working your arms one day, your legs the next, etc... leave a day or two in between working muscle groups.

I'm no expert but when I did lose my 60 pounds that's what I was doing :)

Good luck!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I can't say I agree with a 16yr old at your height and weight dieting. I'm sure you don't want to hear this part, but the truth is, you're technically still categorized under "children" on the health charts. So, unless you're an obese teen (which you're clearly not based on the info you stated), you shouldn't concern yourself with restricting your calories, just put the effort into making use of the calories you eat each day, ex. a balanced dinner instead of snacking through dinner on chips and such.

Based on the info you listed, however, you seem like you'd benefit most from just defining your body shape by adding some muscle tone. Your workout plan seems totally healthy, but I'd add some resistance training to help shape up the parts you think are fat- I'd bet these areas are just in need of some definition and toning. But, I strongly feel you should not be restricting your calorie intake at your age/height/weight. Just eat natural, wholesome food choices and you'll be set. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that.

I remember dieting in my teens and I think back now how silly it was for me to cut out certain foods or food groups because I thought they meant I'd get fat. All I needed was to make sure I was eating nutritiously (not cutting short my calories, just choosing the healthy calories--hard to do at that age when all my friends pigged out after school) and to get a good amount of exercise.

Good luck!

Hey Enchantress,

The first thing you need to do is change the word "diet" and replace it with "lifestyle". As getting the body you're looking for should be something that you work on throughout your life. I'm glad to hear that you are 16yrs old as I think the younger you are the more likely you will be able to change your eating habits and start eating healthier.

I agree with Lizabell as you are not overweight or obese judging by your measurements. I think if you focus more on toning up than rather losing weight you will be much happier. At 5'2" 110lbs you don't need to lose any more weight just focus on toning your muscles as Risty suggested.

Based on your stats you should be eating around 2090 cals/day to maintain your body weight of 110lbs. Getting in shape does not mean starving yourself and not eating, it means making healthy choices throughout the day. Starving yourself is dangerous and unhealthy.

Good Luck,
Casey

Hi, I'm Patrick, I'm not a dietitian or a doctor, but I am a nurse. Number 1, I would suggest you talk to your doctor about starting a exercise regimen given your age and your BMI (body mass index) being 16 and at that height may be the reason you cannot shave those pounds. Women naturally store extra fat because it is needed when the time comes to reproduce as well as hormonal reasons. My question would be what is your diet consisting of. Fat, sugar, and high calorie foods are not good to have, but it also may not be the actual issue. I would suggest protein in the form of low fat, such as chicken to be added to the diet, as well as a high intake of water. Water has an erosion effect on fat storing areas. As a river rushes over rocks and smoothes them rough edges, so does water in the body. The workout: If your trying to lose weight in the thighs, its a hard area to target ideal workouts would be pilate type or yoga in style, but with slight intensity. Less weight with more repetitions will produce the slimming and toning, more weight less repetitions will cause muscle building. Jogging is a good form of cardio which will burn calories, as well as tone the legs and thighs, but at this level your muscles, body, and hormones are trying their best not to let you lose anymore weight, so you have to change your workouts as to confuse your muscles so that you don't have a plateau effect and level off. That is the hardest part of losing the last 10 or so pounds. Doing the same workouts consistently your body learns the routine and stops changing for you.

Recommendation:

Diet- chicken, salads, and add more water (about 8-10 8oz glasses a day)
Workout- Cardiopulmonary stimulant (jogging, elliptical, sprints)- pilate type strengthening and stretching.
Records- Keep track of results, maintain hydration efforts, and continue eating reguardless of weight loss effort. (malnutrition prophalaxsis, decrease possibility of developing anorexia, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, headaches, syncope, hypernatremia or hypokalemia.)

Note- This is how I would go about things personally, once again I am NOT a doctor, I urge you to consult your doctor before starting any regimen of exercise or dieting prior to doing so.

Don't you think your "diet" section is rather vague?

I find your "records" section to be really....unusual. You advice people to keep track of results (which is vague as well) and then just throw out a bunch of various health conditions. Not real helpful info. (green carpet, cedar point, dogs, child birth, toothpaste)
