Hi,

I'm new to this forum, well, to forums full stop! But I need help with my weight.

I always used to be the type of person who could eat anything, I used to actually try to put on weight! Now it's the other way around! :-/

I'm 35, I've had two children ( was rather large with the second!), & I weigh 13st 4lbs at 5'6. I calculated my BMI tonight & it's 30...I don't want to be like this. I'm an apple shape, my stomach often swells, on too of the weight & it gets painful. I have health issues that get in the way of exercising effectively. I had an op at a cancer unit last Oct & they cut through some nerves in my left leg, it doesn't work properly anymore. I also have chronic Fibromyalgia & I don't have enough pain inhibitors so I feel pain most of the time.

But I'm determined to get back to a size ten. I want to do this.
I want to be toned so that my body feels, looks & works better.
I want less stress on my joints, the weight gain has increased the pain.
My hormones also seem to be all over the place, I'm oestrogen dominant. I need to use progesterone cream or patches but no one will prescribe them...I want to feel well again & I know that my weight worsens my health.

I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat fish, can you advise me on how to get rid of these rolls?!
Please!

I suspect that walking and swimming could be good for you.

I am sorry that your operation has left you with leg difficulties - but I do know from my own experience that even slow walking can be beneficial to controlling weight and can be central to becoming more active which in turn helps us to control our weight.
Maybe your leg awkwardness would improve with some gentle walking. It may partly be a question of you getting used to different sensations. I would be tempted to try. You can naturally speed up and do more as things get easier for you.
Swimming can be effective because the water supports our weight.

The walking may well help your hormonal problems too...
I am a PCOS lady (where my hormone levels are screwed up) and I know that I used to suffer from terrible mood swings... I would shoot between the heights of happiness to the depths of despair... I found that the repetitive nature of regular walking actually made me more evenly tranquil.

Other than becoming more active - eat healthily at a calorie deficit and the weight will come off...
Simple food rules should help
- cut out junk food
- try to have plenty fruit and veg
- try to have 2.75 litres of water a day
- make sure that your diet includes things like lean protein and calcium
- switch to low calorie alternatives - eg granulated sweetener, fry light, skimmed milk, fat free or low fat yoghurt
- try to cook things in a healthy way (eg check calories in sauces)

Maybe some keep fit style exercises like sit ups would help with the toning side of things. I am far from an expert in such matters (there are a lot of people on the forum that know more about exercise than me) but I suspect that your fibromyalgia could limit some of the exercise options for you. It seems to me that the important thing about exercise is that you find something that you can do regularly - and if something is incredibly painful I suspect that it will rule things out.

As far as pain and getting active again. Swimming is very low impact way to start to rebuild your muscles. It is amazing the resistance the water offers without causing pain. Remembering that muscle burns fat, it is a good place to start. I even do situps in the water. Hope this helps
