Many gyms and clubs offer orientation sessions to introduce you to the equipment. Check the newsletter or information board for free introductory sessions or workshops and then attend them. It will introduce you to the staff at the facility and may offer the opportunity to meet other new members.
My club offers several free classes and workshops each month, and when they have new equipment, they typically have several orientation sessions as they want everyone to use the equipment properly and safely.
You might also ask about any sort of free fitness assessment - those can often be a free session with a personal trainer. The trainer will ask about your fitness goals, do an assessment, and make suggestions about what exercises might be a good fit to get you off to a good start.
