Hi "community dietitian"

Welcome to the forum! I'm a personal trainer, and have more recently been educating myself on the "intake" side of the equation - as I used to only focus on the "output" - or exercise side.

My clients are seeing better results quicker now that I'm able to help them in a more well-rounded way!

Hopefully we can share ideas/expertise!

i lost 3lb which im happy total of 10lb so far. went on a walk/jog with the dog so its some calories burnt. my next weigh in is on 21/5/09 so 2 weeks. im a bit dissapointed that it was only 3lb but everything is better then nothing. ive also been doing some weights 9lb on each arm.

thnx SyNyStEr14 you have been very inspirational

Whats up tom. You're taller than me, but i think i was at pretty much the same starting point. but you got youth on your side.

I'd like to offer an opinion on how you should use that exercise bike.

That typical 30 mins a day at fast pace is great, but a very small drop in the bucket.

Make a habit, or hobby out of it.

Pedal nice and easy while doing your reading for school.

If you are going to watch TV sit on your bike and pedal nice and easy

The idea is to increase your overall energy usage throughout the day. Which will have a bigger impact than 30 mins of strenuous activity. and you're less likely to get bored.

Walking is great too. Just going on nice easy walks not looking to break any speed records. that will come later :)

Nice and easy man.

thnx RJAZ520 much apreciated would it also help trying to build some extra muscle so i burn more calories? also should i be on 1800 calories aday? sorry if im asking in the wrong section. gonna be on the bike today and then some weights. i want to loose my first 1st stone by the 21/5/09. im really determined to loose more then 4lb for next weigh in  i also asked the nurse if and when i should join a gym or somthing like that.

1800 is pretty low. thats a tough deficit to maintain, your body doesnt like it, it will make you crave and cave. Take it nice and easy. I like throwing in a low calorie day or two, mixed with not so low days to help me cope with that.

You gained weight by eating a diet that gave you enough calories to support 374 lbs. If you just consciously change a few things, such as activity, and making better food choices to less calorie dense foods. You will start to lose. its that easy.

move more, eat less.

Its very easy in these beginning stages. enjoy that. because it gets harder when you have less to lose.

Protein is very important. make sure you're getting enough

What I like

Chicken breasts, no skin
Chicken Thighs, no skin
Lean ground beef
Tuna
Salmon
Broccoli
carrots
mushrooms
Lettuce
cucumbers
celery

Basically lean meats and veggies.

stay away as much as possible from stuff that comes in packaging.

hey tom,
welcome to the forum! and i see your off to a great start too. i kinda know where your coming from because i started at 350 (and that's when i bought my weigh scale so when i try to estimate i think at my highest i was around 365-370pounds)...currently i'm at 327pounds...i started health eating in feb and exercising in march. it's been a long and tough road but i'm in it for the long-term. i've had lots of slip ups but the most important thing is to GET BACK UP AND TRY AGAIN NO MATTER WHAT. because as long as you keep trying you'll succeed.

i need to mention that i'm not an expert or professional whatsoever so don't take my word as law. it's just that you'd asked what healthy stuff could be so was just giving you a short list of what i'm currently eating to give you an idea. there's probably lots of stuff on here i've forgotten that others may chip in as well.

in terms of nutrition i now eat clean meaning first and foremost lots of raw fruit and veges, then for my protein i take lean meats like fish, chicken breast or extra lean beef mince. for my complex carbs i take wholemeal everything so brown bread, brown rice, brown pasta, for breakfast i usually do oatmeal or kellogs all-bran cereal. for now i've succeeded at taking my processed sugars to zero (and i don't use sweeteners either because there's alot of controversy about them too). i've quit junk food too chocolate, crisps, fried foods, takeaways etc. i however have now introduced a treat meal once every week or so, one meal in the week where i can choose to eat a portion of anything i desire to help stop any cravings. but otherwise everything else is healthy.

otherwise i think your off to a great start! there's lots of useful info on here especially in the stickies, plus there's the diary section where you can write what you've eaten/exercised for the day etc there's also challenges and lots of other fun stuff on the forum so feel free to explore. all the best xoxo:seeya:

oops, i've just seen RJAZ520 posted his list while i was still typing my msg so i think i've kinda repeated some stuff so my apologies for that.

im mostly eating the right kind of stuff then. if i ever eat bread i always eat whole meal brown bread, ive also started to eat more veg im more fussy with fruit then veg. i eat chicken breast with out skin. im not a massive fish eater but do eat it every now and then. i eat more veg then fruit. i dont hardly touch chocolate. ive also cut nearly all fizzy drinks completely. im exercising 100% more then i used to do. thnx for all your answers very much apreciated
