Hi all. Maybe I'll be laughed at by some but hopefully not.
I am 5'10 and last time I checked I weighed 165lbs. Wouldn't doubt if I'm closer to 170 now, haven't checked recently. You talk to most (if not all), and 5'10 in height and my weight is completely normal. I definitely do not disagree with that.
However, I just turned 25 in January. I've always been a party-goer: love to go out to bars, whether it's one or two Heinekens or 8 shots of Patron. I moved to Chicago in January from Southern California. Needless to say, here, the bar scene is pretty awesome, and I have taken full advantage of it (as has my wallet
Last summer (July of 2011), I weighed somewhere in the 140 to 145lb range. I've never had an eating disorder: I love to eat, no shame. So I've essentially gained 25-30lbs with a very little change in lifestyle. Yes yes people say your metabolism slows down you turned 25 get use to it.
I was always the skinny guy growing up (not that any of my friends were really overweight). At the age of 22-23, I was in my prime. My confidence level was through the roof: I felt great, my hair was great, my smile was charming...I could approach any girl without a care in the world.
Now it's more the opposite: I know I'm slowly getting that double chin on the go, my cheeks are getting puffy, I recently quit my job, I have zero confidence with the opposite sex. Never now would I approach a girl.
I have never had a consistent workout routine, and I would like to get into one. At my previous apartment complex there was a tiny gym so I gave the treadmill a gander. I ran for 20 minutes straight at the '5' speed, but started at the 3.5 speed. Now I'm not sure if the treadmill increments vary from brand to brand...I would think they do.
Anyways, I felt damn good after this 20 minute session. So next day I go and do the same thing, same length, same speed. Toward the end I could barely feel my legs but I pushed through.
After getting off the treadmill, I could barely walk. So I just sat down for a few moments, tried to stretch out, and went on my way.
So now, to make matters even worse, my friends call me to play basketball the next day (so now we have 3 days in a row).
I push through, and after we finish our game walking is almost unbearable.
This is March-April 2012. So after these 3 intense days, while walking to class my legs would get sooo tight. Especially if I walked fast (I enjoy walking fast). Not my quads, my calves.
So after doing a little research and talking to some exercise-oriented friends, they said it was shin splints (or most likely so).
It is now August 2012. A few weeks ago I went for a run. I had to take some breaks here and there but it was because I was tired (naturally so), not because of the previous murder on my shins/calves.
Of course I was sore the next day. A day later, I decide to do the same run. Not even a quarter into the run and that same horrid sensation is back from the treadmill/basketball events.
So this was in late July: I now get the burning sensation when I run. Goddam it pisses me off so bad. I have all the best intentions to get back in shape but my shins/legs kill me. If I could run 5-7 days a week I would do it in a flash.
I joined LA Fitness here in Chicago and went for a swim recently. That was nice. I probably spent a total of 30 seconds with my bare feet on the ground and I got Athletes Foot (Teatree Oil took care of that thankfully). Canceling my membership mainly because I'm strapped on cash.
Things I'm trying to work on aside from running:
-Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day
-Don't eat late (but I fail horribly at this)
-Don't buy beer unless I'm with people (I have a tendency to just buy a 12 pack and finish it in 2 days)
-Get a job so I'm not a total degenerate.
Essential weight loss goal: 10 to 15 lbs. I just see so many beautiful women with perfect bodies, it is very clear they treat their body like a temple (as one should).
I am 25 now, I know it's only going to get harder as the years pile on.
tl;dr degen 25 year old that has lost total confidence and starting to transform into a chipmunk.
Cheers
David
