Hi there! My name is Tiffany, and I'm a 23 y/o female from Eastern Canada. I searched out a weight loss forum on Google after realizing today that I don't really have anyone in my life who is attempting to lose weight-- I think support is paramount, and so here I am! :)

I'm 5'2, and my highest weight was around 211 lbs. I managed to lose (and keep off) about 10lbs during my one-month stint with Weight Watchers, but stopped attending the meetings for reasons which I will discuss in another thread. After that, I joined a gym, and a while after joining, I started going. :rotflmao:

Honestly, they say that showing up is 50% of the battle, but I think it's more like 80%. We all have those days where it's the last thing we want to do, and those days are remarkably frequent with me! In bullet-form, here are a few things that have really helped me along the way:

  • Personally, I'm not a fan of dieting. I don't believe it's human nature to be successful with restricting, and I am much more about making healthier choices *most of the time* and watching my portions the rest of the time.
  • On that note, I've always had the bad habit of NEEDING to read while I ate. Usually it would be a new magazine or an interesting website, and lots of mindless snacking. It got so bad that if I was in a restaurant, I'd ask for a menu to look at while I ate! To modify that, I now allow myself to read magazines only while on the treadmill. I still snack in front of my computer, but a small change is still a change, right? :)
  • I was never one for physical activity, and so working out was really a challenge. 10 minutes on the treadmill at 85-90% of my max heartrate would leave me exhausted and ready to go home! To work on that, I started doing 60 mins of leisurely walking on the treadmill. My heartrate would still be in the fat-burning / intermediate aerobic range, and really, that's the goal. And again with the magazines! 60 minutes is nothing when you're catching up on Brad & Ang.
  • On that note, 20 minutes 3x per day is still 60 minutes, and that sure beats not doing anything at all!

I think the most important challenge that I've overcome was feeling out-of-place at the gym. A few weeks ago I started thinking, "You may be the biggest person in here, but you're the biggest person at the gym, not the biggest person standing in line at McDonald's." And this is so true! We're all a beginner at some point, and it really is worthwhile to stick out those initial feelings of awkwardness.

I look forward to hearing all about you guys! :)

Ahh welcome medam.

Good to have yet another soldier in the war on weight among our ranks lol.

I'm interested about why you quit Weight Watchers though so I can't wait to read your thread.

The one I went to when I was younger the group meetings were always upbeat and informational and I managed to lose 70lbs during my time there.

Hello and welcome! I definitely agree that starting is way more than half the battle. Getting me to the gym is hard, especially when I'm so busy with school, but in general, even if I could make time - it's super hard to get me there. But once I'm there I figure "I'm here, I need to do this, better bust my butt and hop to it!"
Great idea on only reading while on the treadmill. I always read while I was on the eliptical last year - it really helps the time pass for me. Plus I always had reading to do for school. And it's definitely a good change! Baby steps, right?
Good luck on your journey, see you around!

Yes welcome to the group and the best of luck with the new lifestyle. I am pretty new here as well so we have that in common. That and we also both lived in New Brunswick, Canada lol. Good quote...despite the fact I don't go to a gym anymore (not that I don't want to) but I have weights at home.

I think I'm going to try and get into the gyms again though I have to find a better one than the one that I went to...besides the fact that it has closed it also didn't have people with the right attitude. If you hang around the gym long enough you'll hear stupid things like people saying "If I do treadmill for 30 minutes I can get a big mac"...It gave me and my Gym buddy a good laugh though.

Anyhow, best of luck!

As a fellow Canadian I wish you the best of luck. And trust me, most people who make snide comments about others (and there are unfortunately a lot) rarely make them when people are at the gym.

If that type of stuff worries you (and people are social, so I know it might at some level) go to the gym around the same time everyday. If regulars see you in there chugging away everyday, you'll earn their respect.

Oh ya, if you ever get bored of aerobic exercise, you can get in that same range by lifting weights. If you ever need a change and the very idea of getting on the treadmill for another day makes you cringe.
