Hi there all,

Found these boards through a web search and read a few threads - found out what a supportive group of people you all are so decided I'd jump aboard for the new year weight loss push.

A bit about me - 37 year old guy living in Brighouse, West Yorkshire ; been overweight now for about 7 or 8 years and I'm fed up with all the associated problems it has caused me, so I am finally grabbing the bull by the horns and doing something about it.

I'm 5' 9" tall and currently 245 lbs ; I am wanting to get that down to about 160lbs. I've been that weight in the past just after I left university, so I know I can be that weight again.

What sort of problems has it been causing me? Well - most recently, I have been having a lot off trouble with gout in my right ankle and knee ; my GP has told me that it's most likely caused by bad diet and that carrying too much weight is not going to help the situation much at all. There's also of course the problem of self-confidence. I have never been the most confident of people anyway - and being overweight adds to this. My friends posted some pictures on Facebook a few weeks ago of when we all went for a walk during autumn - the size of the tummy I was displaying did quite shock me - another jolt in the direction I have now decided to take ;-)

I boredom eat - I'm not even going to try to make excuses because I know it to be true ; I get bored, I eat. I know that I need to find some distractions and some self-discipline to break out of the cycle. So - the plan is for a total change in lifestyle.

Yesterday, I went our to buy a decent set of bathroom scales which measures both weight (245.2 lbs) and body fat percentage (42.2% - yes, I am *well* aware this needs to come down!!). Today I am going to buy a set of kitchen scales so I can get some sort of portion control going on with my food.

I am also hoping to kick the boredom eating thing by having less food in the house - you can't eat food you haven't got, right? ;-)

So - that's some information about me and why I have decided to come here - looking forward to getting to know some of you!

I am also someone who eats out of boredom. While also simply keeping the food out of my house (which is immensely helpful!) I've found a couple of hobbies that I can do that are so all engrossing that I don't even think about food while I'm doing them. It's hard to sew and much on chips at the same time without screwing up my fabric, you know? :)

Welcome! I am sure you'll reach your goals in no time.
