I found these forums after a bit of searching on Google. I'm not looking for some miracle-cure or fast-and-easy-diet. I'm just looking for advice and support.
I'll be short and to the point: I am a Senior in high school, and all my life I've been a very large guy. Due to a medical condition, I have an abysmally slow metabolism, though whether that has anything to do with it, I don't know.
I am currently seventeen years old, 5'8", and weigh 347 lbs.
The gain of weight throughout my life has been, quite literally, so very gradual that neither I nor my friends and loved ones have realized, until recently, how horrendously out of hand it was getting. The fact of the matter is that I could lose the equivalent of two small people and still be healthy.
Although I'm not in any dire straits clinically, I'm so out of shape that life is becoming hard in all sorts of areas. For instance: I've been looking forward to getting a new bike... only to realize I'm too immense and heavy to pedal it for any appreciable amount of time, and I'm far too broad for the bike seat.
I realize this is a problem I can change, though it may take the rest of my lifetime, but I just am not sure how to start. I'm too heavy to do pushups or sit ups.... I don't have the stamina to ride a bike or run... really, the only sorts of exercise I'm even remotely proficient in are walking and swimming.
It's become clear to me that I have two choices: Get into shape, or get into (eventually) a pine box. Thanks for your time, and I'll post here in these forums if I make any progress in the coming weeks.
