AHello! I'm glad I found this site. I've struggled with being overweight all my life. I'm naturally curvy with a nice hourglass shape, but there is just too much of it! I knew I had to make some changes when I realized that I'd been wearing cardigans all summer to hide my upper arms!

To add even more incentive, I've reunited with my first love after being separated for twenty years! We've been dating again for almost a year. Even though we live four hours apart, we've managed to spend most very weekend and holidays together. Now we've purchased a home and the closing is only one week away. We plan to get married in about a year, BUT I mean to look absolutely FABULOUS when I walk down the aisle!

Initial gw: 150
Final gw: 130

I know I can do this if I put my mind to it. I've seen so many inspirational stories on this forum that I can't wait to get started. I've already started moderate changes, but now I want o kick into high gear!

I'm open to suggestions, discussions, any and all forms of mutual encouragement so feel free to chat away! :)

Hi, that sounds great! Glad to hear about the love story on the side, and that's certainly something doable in a year, but don't expect quick results. I've heard others on here say it as well, but it's more of a marathon than a race.

One of the first things you should do is determine what's a healthy amount of calories you should be taking in each day for weight loss. There are sites that do this (like MyFitnessPal), and they give you a good idea of what you should take in each week if you want to lose an average of 2 lbs. per week.

Also, invest in a scale if you don't already have one. What motivated me to get on my diet is finally stepping on a scale and realizing just how bad it had gotten. Weigh yourself once a week is generally what you should do, because sometimes weight fluctuates or stays the same.

Finally, when you "kick it into high gear", make sure you're moderately getting to that point. If you couldn't run for 10 minutes straight before, don't start right into that now. Work yourself up to those levels. You'll find yourself quickly there. When I started my diet, I could tell I was out of shape because I could barely jog for more than 2 minutes before needing to rest. Now I'm almost back up to where I was in college and running a mile before rest.

Hope any of this helped, and good luck on everything!

AThanks for the advice. I tend to start out with gusto, but that generally leads to setbacks so I'm forcing myself to approach this gradually and so far, it's made it doable. I started out at 211, so I've made some progress with changes in my eating habits. Starting a food log was truly an eye opener or me. I'm logging on loseit.com, but I like the community aspect of this site a lot.
