Heart rate monitors

Anyone use one im curious cause id love to know exactly what i do when i work out instead of relying on the gym equipment ect ect. Id like to find one but i really dont want to spend an arm and a leg on one i see some at walmart for 30 but do they work well? Input appreciated!

I have a Polar F7. It works well for me, reliable and easy to use. It gives me my heart rate and what it thinks are the calories I burn. Slightly better then what gym machines say but IMO disregard the calorie valuation, they are grossly over estimated in any machine and also take into consideration your BMR which means your not really finding out how much more your burning, your finding out your total calorie burn, eg including that which you'd burn if you were on bedrest all day.

Garmain seem to be the best models for running outside as they give you GPS details. People who have Garmains seem to love them but they come with a heafty price tag. IMO if your new to the whole HRM thing you'd be better off starting with a basic model and working out how you can better the model, thinking of functions you do and don't use or want.

Polar do many different models and it depends on what your needs are, what your aims are and what your price range is. If you go to their site you can take a quiz which advises on which models would best suit you.

I couldnt find the quiz on there o.o

I had one from Walmart and it was junk. I'm not sure if it's the same $30 model you were looking at. It was the kind you wore on your wrist and had to press a button on the front to get a reading. It worked okay for a couple of months, then died. I agree with summer123 that the calorie calculations are useless. The numbers it calculated were way more than you would get from the tables that show calories burned during exercise, so I didn't trust the numbers.

OK, not so much a quiz but the product page describes what each range does. You can then select which model your considering and weigh them up.

Another good site which shows models across the brands is

UK bases site but they are really helpful and you can submit questions.
