Healthy food choices in Restaurants

Hello to all of you out there putting in your healthy choices! I was trying to find a thread, or maybe start one about experiences in Restaurants so we can make healthy choices while eating outside our homes! Of course nationally known places to eat and maybe more localized as well so we can see what kind of healthy choices you have seen out and about. Let me know your thoughts please, they are appreciated! Thanks!

Truth be told it's a lot easier to eat healthy in regular restaurants rather than chain restuarants -andthis has been talked about here before -you might want to dust off your search button.

In a regular restaurant -tell the server what you like and don't like and the chef - not a cook following a set of guidelines will accommodate you. especially if you're a regular in the restaurant.. they want to keep their customers happy.

The story i've told before -is there was a local restaurant I went to frequently when I lived in NEw HAmpshire and I'm a fussy eater -always have been - so I'd ask for specific things.. one night the chef came out and asked why I was so particular and I explained that I was trying to lose weight and eat healthier but not giv eup my love of really good food... this was after he said he haad healthy options on the menu -- yeah but those were bland and boring...

He invited me to lunch one day -and I spent about 3 hours with him -on a newer healthier menu choices -he figured that I wasn't the only person concerned with losing weight - but didn't want to sacrafice flavor... so he l istened.

Bottom line - Talk to the person doing the cooking and ask for what you want.. Don't settle.

I just order a small salad (with very little dressing on the side) and grilled chicken breast. That is about the only thing safe for me. I used to always eat most things plain anyway, so it doesn't bother me much.

It's cheaper, too. At Applebee's they will bring out two generously sized pieces and charge $4 as if I were just adding extra chicken to another entree. Then I have one small bite of my husband's dessert. Really, really small.

Thanks

I was pretty sure it had been talked about, I just like getting fresh ideas, so thanks for the input! I know that I have a hard time ordering when I am only eating certain foods. Sometimes I just want to know others thoughts! I I have been to upscale restaurants and the chefs are hush hush, so I try the best I can to ask the waiter for their knowledge of what is in the food, especially amount, kinds and if they use oil for certain dishes. I have ordered veggie dishes but they come with oil in the veggies. I Was looking for ideas that people order, so I appreciate the applebees chicken idea with a salad. I was there the other day and I just had a baked potato with cheese and a salad with their fat free ranch on the side...I did treat myself to their strawberry lemonade cause it's so tasty, as a dessert! Thanks!

I usually make sure the meat is grilled, or baked, and does not contain any creamy sauces.

I get vegetables on the side instead of chips!

The only restaurant I won't do this is Indian, and I order a Butter Chicken Curry with Naan bread, I have this about once every 3 months so it's a real treat for me.

When you like cooking as much as I do, it's no fun to order something that you could have done at home: "I could have grilled that!" Besides, I can't really afford to eat out so much, so when I do I really enjoy it. I got Korean the other day with friends: we split a hot plate of beef. It was probably loaded with oils, but between us, and with all the veggies, and the cute little sides, it was a great meal. Especially when I know I'm not going to eat out again for at least a month or so.

Whatever I get in a restaurant no matter what I always only eat half because as we know the portions a restaurants are ridiculous. That usually keeps the calories down and gives me dinner for the next night.
