Has anyone ever taken a week off of their program?

The reason I ask is, I hurt myself last night (Something in my shoulder). I hurt it due to total lack of focus, which lead to really poor form. The last couple nights in the gym I've noticed I really had to keep myself in the program. I have been going religiously for the last 2 months, 6 times a week. The injury isn't really bad, and I may have been able to work through it, I packed it up though since I didn't want to get hurt any worse. I think Im burning out. Has anyone else experienced this? If you have, did a week off help cure it?

I'm sorry to hear you hurt yourself - that stinks!

Don't feel bad about taking a week off, especially since you really need it. You won't lose significant strength in a week.

Go rest!! :D

I've taken a week off before too. I didn't fall behind; in fact, I think it's a good thing to give your body a break every once in awhile. If you're hurt, it's better to rest now and let yourself heal rather than push through the pain and risk having to take months off from hurting yourself worse.

The hurdle for me is taking time off without also flushing the nutrition down the toilet. Be careful of that!! =)

hehe yea I know what you mean. I have every intention of keeping my nutrition up. Thanks for the words of encouragement ladies :)

i just finished my week off cardio, been so sick and stuffed up, not fun running with snot running down your face. im going back today, and i havnt noticed any muscle or endurance loss, i think its almost good to take a few days break every few weeks.

A good strength coach would recommend that you take a week off or have a deceleration phase about every 15-16 weeks. The thing is you don't want to work through a shoulder injury, you should have this looked out. You may have pulled one of your rotator cuff muscles, most likely the superspinatous. This can sometimes be due to a strength imbalance and using internal and external shoulder exercises and can be used to strengthen the deltoids to prevent injury. There are some tests that can be performed on yourself to determine if you have pulled something or not but this would require a PT or CSCS instead of me telling you how to determine over the internet.

See a doctor soon, because the last thing you want to do is tear something or have a shoulder impingement.

Just my two cents.

ive gone down the shoulder impingement road! and it sucks!! its due to the deltoid being to large compared to the rotator cuff muscles.. and evo is soo right, thats what i did was work thru it.. WRONG THING TO DO! doc says if i hadnt worked through it i would have had 1/2 the physical therapy i had to do..

Yes, i take a week off every 3 months at least to prevent overtraining and let my body rest and recover. I think it is very important! So don't feel bad about it.
