Hamstring Problem

Hi All,

I'm marathon training but have been out of running action for around 10 days and I hate it!

I have visited a Sports Injury Specialist who said the hamstring is very tight at the minute and spent an hour on the massage ironing out any problems. While it feels better now (not 100%) I'm unsure when to resume running. I have another session on Friday to do the same in the same area

Question 1: Obviously hard for you guys to tell on what pains etc I have but what would you advise? In this 10 day period I have still been spinning, doing weights, walking and occasional cycle to/from work up lots of hills

Question 2: As a part of my training I'm thinking of incorporating 30 minute Sports Massages every so often to iron out any slight niggles. Is this recommended or are they generally used as a last resort?

Cheers

Is the problem in your hamstring specifically just tightness? Or was there a resulting injury due to inflexibility?

It is tightness at the minute but goes through phases of being OK but then being painful again. I felt I could run on Tuesday which hurt a little initially then was fine. Now it feels fine and so will try again and see

But the injury specialist said it was really tight and so set about trying to loosen up some of the tension

Any advice?

My best advice for that would be to recommend investing in a foam roller and working out tightness once a day with that. (It will be a real love-hate relationship with that thing, because it works by hurting A LOT.) In addition to that, keep up the stretching (which I'm sure you're doing). Make sure to stretch after using the foam roller though.
