hammer curls

Why are hammer curls so much easier than normal ones? And, is that good or bad? If I have a hammer position, I can get up 50 pounds per arm for 6 reps. If I twist my wrists to a horizontal position, that weight goes down tremendously, to like 35 per arm.

because they are not identical exercises...and you may be cheating on the hammer curls (only YOU will know for sure...watch yourself...the elbow should NOT move an inch...pretend its pinned to the side of your body)

straight curls hit the biceps, but hammer curls start pulling in a bit more forearm.

ALL curling moves should involve nothing but the forearm moving on the hinge of the elbow. this prevents 'swinging' the weights around, which is no where near as efficient as proper form...and allows for a lot more weight to be used than you can actually use.

Even with perfect form they are easier because the muscle recruitment is different. Treat them as separate exercises.

Think of chin ups and pull ups. Some people think they are the same, but try and see how many you can do of each...you'll be surprised. And the answer is the same here as well. Muscle recruitment.
