Hello, my name is Jeremy and I am new to these forums. I am looking for support and maybe a challenge to lose weight. I am a student at Texas Tech university and I am 22 years old.

1. What is your current height and weight?
5'7'' 255 lbs

2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
165 lbs
3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
200 lbs December 2008

4. Why do you want to lose weight?
Diabetes runs in my family and most of my family is overweight. I also would love to see a six pack on my body. I want to not be sweating when I walk (even slowly) across campus or while doing simple jobs at work. I want to not be embarrassed to take off my shirt and go to the pool. It sure wouldn't be a bad thing if more girls would take a second look at me :D

5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
I have always wanted to go skydiving. I suppose I will set up a goal to go skydiving when I reach a certain weight.

6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Drinking. All my friends drink and thats what we do when we hang out. If I'm not drinking, I'm not being social. It's only once every 2 weeks or so, but after I drink, I fall off my diet :(

7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
I don't think, I know.

8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
I quit playing so many video games and have started concentrating extra on school. Between school and work it is sometimes hard to get up to go exercise. I need to exercise though. This will not be as easy as it was when i was 17.

9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
I lost weight on the Atkins diet when i was 17. The main factor for that was my mother cooking all my meals. When you live on your own it is alot easier to have taco bell or Sonic cook for you.

13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
I love to cook when I get time and energy. I'll cook anything that sounds tasty.
14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
when I'm on my diet, nowhere. When I cheat, chicken strips or burgers anywhere I can get em.

I am currently on the Atkins diet. I have lost 5 pounds so far in a week. I did cheat two days ago when I had a hard week at school and went to the bar and had 3 beers, came home and had a burger patty with veggies and 2 slices of bread. When I woke up though, I had lost 1 pound, and I stayed on the diet and have lost another 2 since then.

My favorite meal plan is:

Breakfast-Greek Omelet (spinach, feta cheese, 2 eggs) and a small tomato
Lunch-Grilled Chicken Salad
Dinner-2 burger patties with cheese, avocado, lettuce, and sauteed mushrooms<---favorite diet meal ever!

The biggest problem I have with the Atkins diet is finding a way to eat 20 carbs a day in veggies. I normally make it to 15 or 17. I really want to make it all the way to 20 so when I continue through the phases, I will be able to better gauge how many and what types of carbs I should eat. This way i can make it though enough stages to not get bored and change the way I eat forever. Induction is hard though, and I need to figure out a way to eat so I can get past it.

Are you crazy? Have you run this plan by your mother? If not, I hope she smacks some sense into you when you do! Who in their right mind would willingly jump out of a perfectly good aircraft?

Actually I did tell my mom. I invited her to go but she was like, "No way!" But she wasn't against the idea. My cousin just jumped last weekend and has video feed of it, she told her to take me next time!

August 5,

I ordered a those dumbbells that you can adjust the weight, a barbell, and an exercise ball. I am way too busy with work and school that I can't make it to a gym, so I figure I can do a little exercise every day before school if I can do it at home. This fall is going to be tough though. I have an 8 AM class! I haven't had an 8AM class since my freshman year. Lame, but whatever. Anyone know a good workout video?

I really like the Biggest Loser workout tape with Bob... very cheap and hard as hell! It's a great workout and not too long (20-45 minutes depending on what you do). It also has a weight lifting part.

My best friend lost 120 lbs on the atkins diet and has kept it off for the last 5 years... I tried it and just couldn't live without my carbs :) Now I calorie count and exercise, but to each their own!

Good luck!!!

The Cardio Max and Sculpt Biggest Loser DVDs are great, and they're only like $10! I enjoy all the Biggest Loser DVDs (and the show!).

Hello from a fellow Texan!

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the tips!

August 6,

Today I weighed in at 255. In all my yo-yo dieting in the past few months, I haven't been able to get under this weight. Hopefully I can get to 250 by Tuesday. My friend is visiting from Las Cruces and I want to be able to have a few beers at the bar when she comes. If i made it to 250 I'd surely feel better about drinking one time. Today I have a final and another one on Friday. Maybe after summer school ends I'll be a bit less stressed and can drop weight a little easier.

Hello!
Personally and professionally (as a medic) I dislike the Atkins diet, but it will be interesting to see how you do on it, as I haven't really followed anybody's progress on Atkins yet.
I just hope that you are aware that high fat contents of food (even when you lose weight because of the ketotic state) can harm your arteries which can lead to heart disease.

I just needed to say that and now I can be totally supportive, so yey for 5 pounds lost, that is great!

The atkins diet is just one tool that people can use to learn the fundamentals of weight loss. I've read so many diet books and implimented many different schools of diet thought into my personal plans. I think you'll find what works for you and and it may not all come from one diet plan. On that note, have you had your urine checked to see if you have ketones in it? I remember when I tried atkins when my liver started burning fat I had the worst breath. I even offended myself. But, I'm a carb junkie and I could not keep it up. I only last about 10 lbs and then gaine 4 back after quitting for a net loss of 6 lbs on the plan. every lbs helps, but I felt like I needed a lifestyle I could live with and atkins wasn't my answer. Keep up the good work!

I'm well aware of the risks of Atkins. Dr. Atkins addresses this in his book, although I'm not sure how biased his opinion is. The science makes sense though. Anyway, my mother did this a long time ago and now she eats basically anything within moderation and after losing 30 pounds she hasn't taken any weight back for about 5 years now. I will more than likely stick with it forever though, if I can get past induction before I quit again. The way I see it, how I was eating before could not be nearly as unhealthy as how I am eating now. I'm basically just cutting out all the bread items. And my family has a history of diabetes, so I gotta lose weight now. Maybe after I reach my goal weight I will change it up and keep working out. I found that if I work out and eat whatever I want, I will lose weight, but my schedule doesn't allow for that kind of commitment right now. But I really do appreciate your concern Camy, but the bottom line is, Jeremy not on the diet is not exactly healthy either. I know there are healthier ways, but I cannot do a calorie diet, I feel hungry all the time and you can only go hungry constantly for so long before you break. On Atkins, I feel full all day.

And nah, I never used the test papers. I probably should but I am very forgetful. I've been meaning to buy an iron for 6 months now, I just never get around to it xD

August 6,

As per the Atkins induction stage, you are supposed to eat 20 grams of carbs every day. 12-15 need to come from veggies. The hardest part, I'm finding, is actually making it to 20 carbs. 1/2 cup lettuce only has 0.2 and most veggies don't have much more. The second biggest reason I never stay with this diet is because I don't track how many carbs I'm eating, so I can't advance by adding 5 every week until I find my median carb amount. I just got some low carb wheat tortillas though, and that helps get me closer to 20. I also don't have time to eat 3 meals a day, which is bad because I guess it slows my metabolism.

Today I weighed in at 253, my lowest in about a year. But I'm reluctant to put it on my ticker until tomorrow or the next day. I don't want to get my hopes up and then have to change it. I'll update soon though

A great workout video is "30 Day Shred" with Jillian from The Biggest Loser show. It has 3 workouts on the dvd- you do the 1st one for a week or two (when ever it becomes easy to you) and then move onto the 2nd and so on with the 3rd. They combine strength training, aerobic, and cardio in each workout.
It will definitely leave you sweating!
It's only a 25 minute workout, but I also do some more cardio (treadmill or biking) for an hour that day.
I ordered the video through Amazon, but they sell it at Walmart too I believe.
