Half a whisker away from Type II Diabetes...

At this time last week I knew that I was 5' 9" tall.

And I knew that I weighed 310 lbs.

And I knew that those fact meant I had a BMI of 45, placing me in the category of "Super Obese."

(Shouldn't I get a cape and tights or something? ... Okay, so nobody really wants to see me in a cape and tights. ...But maybe a secret underground lair, or a faithful sidekick?*)

But what I didn't know, but found out last Tuesday, was that I had a fasting blood glucose level of 120 mg/dl. And that my doctor says that when you get up to 126 mg/dl, you officially have Type II Diabetes.

I don't want to be diabetic: I've got enough problems already.

So, Something Has Got To Be Done:

I've got to improve my eating habits, generate some exercise habits, and generally alter my lifestyle well away from that of a 49-yo 300-lb Type II Diabetic with a BMI that some estimates say yield a life expectancy of 54(!).

And so I'm here, with the rudiments of a plan (Step 1: Start Keeping Food Diary), and in hope of your camaraderie and support. I'll try to give the same to others here, and I wish the very best of luck for all of us.

(*Just seven pounds to lose and I'll be "Morbidly Obese." I plan to dress all in black and wander around graveyards a lot, sepulchrally whispering things like, "Thus quoth the raven: 'Lipitor.' "

Thirty pounds after that, I'll be "Severely Obese" - I'll have to practice my withering glances and inflexible criticisms.

Once I lose another forty lbs, I'll merely be "obese." If that means I'll need to wear a lot of beige and work at being unremarkable, I'll really look forward to losing the next 30 lbs and finally becoming "overweight" - despite the trouble that'll cause me at all those trucker's Weigh Stations out on the highway. ;) )

Sooooooo... I'm gathering that maintaining a good sense of humour won't be a problem for you..... :)

Welcome, Evelyn!

I recently discovered I am insulin resistant, myself. In "solving" that dilemma, I was finally able to lose weight (six years of weight gain and failed weight loss effort before I learned of my insulin resistance). So, I wish you the very best of luck in finding out what works for your body, and making the changes you need, to achieve your goals.

Maintaining my sense of humour = not really a problem for me.

Not weirding out people I'm trying to introduce myself to with off-kilter flights of ridiculous fancy = can be a problem for me.

Thanks for the welcome, Jody! And congratulations on your sucess.

(I'm especially glad to hear that you've done it because it reassures me that I may be able to do it too. :) )
