The gym I'm at has something like that.
It's a program called FitTrac, basically an orientation/beginner program. The consultant (generally someone studying to be a trainer, or just starting out), sets the person up on one of the circuits of machines, shows them which seat /weight settings to use, etc and writes it up on a chart/card thingie that they can bring with them when they workout. (assuming no contraindications)
It's very, very basic, and pretty much for people who have absolutely no idea where to start or what to do (those that it would be a bad idea to show them some freeweight stuff then leave them alone) - and that may not be able to afford private training.
There are things I don't like about it, but overall, I think it provides some hope and guidance to otherwise lost individuals, and also gets them started using some of the equipment properly - rather than trying to figure it out and getting hurt.
