I'm 74 years old, 6', 255 lbs., Type 2 diabetes under control with metformin. I have an event to go to and all my suits haven't been worn in 10 years and don't even begin to fit. I thought I may have put on a few lbs. but had no idea how bad it is. My knees are bad, I have arthritis in my spine, and sciatica. I've been going to the gym for 2 weeks and my sciatica pain has been drastically reduced and my knees seem to be improving. I'm very stiff and have very little flexibility. I don't have a weight goal in mind, I just want to look and feel good. The journey begins.

Welcome

Good to hear that you're allready feelling the benefits of working out!

I'm not sure what excercises you've been doing but if you're stiff and not flexible at all yoga might be a very good way of working out for you. It helps you get more flexible and improves core strength, and doesn't impact the joints.

Good luck on your journey :)

It is never too late to turn back the clock where our health is concerned!! So happy for your decision in this :) Don't give up!! At 74, your are an inspiration to me!!

Welcome to the forum.

Well done for starting to address your issues and it is great that you are seeing some improvement in your health.

Swimming is always suggested for people with joint problems because water supports your weight while you exercise. Any exercise is good - and carrying less weight should be of benefit to both your diabetes and your joints.

Walking might prove to be a useful form of exercise... it sounds unlikely when you have bad knees and arthritis. I know that I thought that walking would not be much benefit to my husband (who has suffered from gout for well over 20 years) - but when he HAD to lose weight as he was severely morbidly obese but requiring surgery urgently - he found that walking worked out well for him. The main thing was understanding that it did not have to be done quickly to be of benefit...

Naturally - healthy eating at an appropriate calorie level for weight loss plays a very big part in any such project. We really cannot do it all by going to the gym.

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.
