Hi guys,

Despite what my screen name may imply, I am Brian and a newcomer to this forum. I've been juggling with my weight for the last few years and upon getting accepted to medical school it has dawned on me that I should really get into shape for not only my appearance, but more importantly my health. I've done regular reduced-cal diets w/ exercising, fad diets like Atkins and South Beach Diet, and regardless of what I do I gain the weight back. Right now I'm at around 250 lbs. and want to get to 180 lbs. by January 1, 2009. College is a difficult place to maintain a healthy lifestyle, so I'm finally putting my foot down and I want to get on the right track with diet and exercise.

I guess my main problems are motivation to exercise and eating smaller portions. Between my hefty courseload and other extracurricular activities (I'm an EMT, president of a club, teaching assistant for a class, etc.) it is hard to schedule time in to go to the gym or just take a nice long walk (plus the Boston weather is notorious in the winter as a deterrent to going out). As for my eating habits, I don't really eat much junk food, but being on the go makes it difficult to eat three square meals (or five if someone is into smaller snacks) a day. I try to be conscious of what I eat, but often I eat a larger portion than I probably should and it's hard to control random cravings I get.

I hope this is not too much information I'm disclosing here, but I wanted to say hi and I look forward to integrating myself in this online community.

Congrats on med school.

Sometimes the best motivation is to set a goal. 13 months to lose 70 lbs is a nice long-term goal, but how about some smaller ones along the way? And universities have gyms on campus, so that can help avoid the cold. Just bring your gym stuff to the school and workout.

One of the best ways to eat better and lose weight is to purge your home of bad food. That's always a good start and brings about the impetus to actually follow your plan.

Good luck!

Michael

Sounds like a reasonable goal :) You can do it!!
