Got my treadmill! few questions

So I got my treadmill a few days ago, I have only used it twice as I was waiting to get real running shoes for so I can use it and not use my dirty other shoes.

Anyways I was just on it for an hour, 3-5 incline throughout and 3.0 speed. I had to stop/start it so I wont have an extact number but it was about 3 miles and 600 calories burned. I have a chest strap that gives me my heartrate etc.

I wonder how accurate the calorie counter is on there. I understand the chest strap gives me a more accurate heart rate, but does it have anything to do with the calories counted by the machine?

Anyways I am pretty happy with it so far. It is running a bit louder then the one in the shop when I tried it out so I need to call but so far it feels great to be able to exercise and feel good while doing it.

I can't say this for a fact, but I don't think the calorie counters on cardio machines are correct. I'm thinking I read that somewhere on these forums, but I can't remember.

If you go onto livestrong.com you should be able to look up how many calories you burned.

Hope this helps!

I've seen a few different things on this topic in the past, and wanted to shed a little light.

There are a bunch of different ways that these things calculate calories, and for all intents and purposes they're as accurate as you could expect. I wouldn't risk it to start and eat the whole 600 calories that you burned, but it's probably accurate to within 100 calories. This of course, depends on your honesty with the machine. Have you been giving it a lot of heart rates? Did you step off for a minute to catch your breath while it still ran? Etc. Also, make sure that as you lose weight, that you update that number into the machine.

As for the running shoes, go to an actual running store and have them do a gait analysis and tell them what you're doing. Usually, they are a WEALTH of knowledge and can get you set up for your arch, pronation, etc. Running on a treadmill is unique in a lot of ways and they will get you set up nicely to help your feet and knees (and back, hips, etc.). It's definitely worth the extra cost!

Personally, i HATE treadmills for my own running, so kudos on your new program!

Well currently I am not running on it, Just "speed" walking if you will using high/low incline through out the workout. I will work up to jogging on low incline then walking on high and then resting etc.

I already got a pair of shoes that have been working great. Maybe I didn't mention it but the heart rate monitor is going the whole time, I have a band that goes around my chest and it records it.

I am sure its fairly accurate and I in no way want to know if i burned 600 calories so i can go stuff my face with something else. I just like to know I guess how well I did so i can use it as a guideline for future workouts.

1 hour on it so far has been an average of 600-750. Either way I am really enjoying it so far. I knew a gym membership wouldn't work out for me and this is working perfectly. If its in the house I am bound to use it. Working out in a climate controlled area saves me! lets me worry less about sweating my you know what off vs focusing on a good workout.

the calories burned function on treadmills and other machines is usually highly inaccurate, take your avg heart rate from your monitor and double check it
