exercise and nutrition. What ideas do you guys have to teach your kids to be healthy now?

I don't buy junk. We buy the food and prepare the meals so thats pretty simple. As for exercise, I take them hiking and play sports with them.

We talk a lot about what is healthy and not. We did that even before I started this, so it's not like anything new.

We also grow and eat a lot of vegetables, so that's always been part of the plan. One thing that I've heard and I agree with is to not talk about weight or fat on kids. Talk about what's healthy foods for good growth and health.

Another thing that I'm trying is my son is 47 inches and a lot of the rides at the water park you need to be 48 inches tall. Well, eat more vegetables and you'll be there by the end of the summer. He's close enough now.

There's a really good series of cookbooks (and I think website too ) that's healthy eating geared at children - called Looney Spoons... these books are all about healthy food with fun names and can get kids involved in nutrition

There was some chef somewhere who railed against the newest cookbooks out there that are all about hiding vegetables in foods... His take was - you hide vegetables in mac and cheese, you aren't getting the kid to like and appreciate the vegetable you get the kid to appreciate mac and cheese -not exactly the objective you're going for.

What a parent should do is lead by example... Whole foods -minimal processed foods.. Mom should NOT be dieting and eating separate foods as the rest of the family... and spending time involved in some physical activity...

We get so much out of having the kids help out with the garden. What's better then cooking your own vegetables is cooking vegetables that you grew. We talked about having a kids garden this year, but I didn't get around to make it, so it will have to wait till next year.

You're right, Mal, celebrate the veggies.!
