Geam's Diary

It has been a few months since my last post in my other thread and today I want to start over. No, let me rephrase that: today I am starting over. I have been making some small changes the past couple days in preparation for starting over, but found myself slipping here and there.

My goal with this, well, with life in general right now, is to make three improvements to my life until they are second-nature or I have mastered them. Once something is no longer a problem, I can re-prioritize what I want to change in my life.

Three improvements:
1. Do not eat until full. Eat one serving instead.
2. Do not eat while preparing food. Dish up a serving when complete.
3. Bring lunch and a snack to work every day. If not possible, eat something healthy.

Three goals:
1. Walk or bike for an hour at least three times per week.
2. Find a healthy and fulfilling breakfast alternative to cereal.
3. Find a third goal.

These are subject to change and I may not keep them up-to-date in this threat, but I will probably comment on them from time to time. Today I am painting my spare bedroom and have the bed thrown in the room that is someday going to be my office. I cannot wait until the rooms are all done, I buy my new desk, and I have a real office. I was hoping to be about two hours ahead of where I am right now, so I should probably get back to work.

Hopefully I will keep updating this thread. I hope to get on the right path now. :)

  1. What is your current height and weight?
    I am 6'1" and 270#.

  2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
I think 200# is closer to my ideal weight. I will let you know when I get closer.

  3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
I put together a progressive goals chart where I hope to lose three pounds per month and it puts 01/01/2009 (four months from today) at 253#, but that was when I thought I was 265# today.

  4. Why do you want to lose weight?
I am tired of being overweight (or, more technically, obese) and getting winded from not-so-rigorous excercize. I also want to be more healthy.

  5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
My goal of three pounds per month does put me at 200# in June 2010. I suspect my high school ten-year reunion will be that month.

  6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Food, willpower, and me. Pick two and I am fine. Put me around food and I will eat. I need to stop doing that.

  7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
Food. Not to blame my family, but we are a type that eats constantly. My grandmother and mother bake constantly (and I learned from them and love to bake, too), so there have always been sweets around.

  8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
I need to find more productive things to do with my time. I just signed up for an aikido class (which looks like it might be cancelled due to lack of members), I have been biking around the neighborhood, and I try to go out for walks when I can. Not spending time in the kitchen will help greatly.

  9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
When I signed up for WLF a year ago, I was at 275# on 09/01/2007 and was at a low of 248# on 02/01/2008. Unfortunately things turned around within about two months and I got back to my old weight quickly. I lost focus because of work being really busy and buying a house. Work is still really busy, but I am in the house now and I am doing a lot of work to get the place fixed up.

  10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
    See above.

  11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?

  12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
No. I hate the concept of that.

  13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
Yes, I try to cook several times per week and save food for leftovers for lunches at work and quick dinners during the week.

  14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
I have probably only gone out to eat a handful of times in the past four or five months for dinner. My disposable income has gone into paint, tools, and supplies for the house. I have been really wanting to go out for sushi for a while, but that is too expensive at the moment. I think I have outgrown sit-down-fast-food (I just made that up) places like Friday's and Applebee's where the food is overprocessed and disgusting if you really look at it. I have been going out to eat for lunch during work more often than I should and probably not eating as healthy as I should. It is expensive and unhealthy, so starting right now (I just decided) I am going to really watch what I have for lunch.

  15. What are your three favorite foods?
    Sushi, grilled anything, pizza.

  16. What are your three favorite restaurants?
Wasabi (Japanese food), Sammy's pizza (which is not around where I live now), and The Vegetarian (Indian food about four blocks away).

  17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
Watch what I eat and how much I eat. I have wanted to start making meals and putting it on a plate before I start eating and I need to start doing that now. While cooking I probably eat more than a full serving... and then I eat more when it is done cooking.

  18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
    My clothes would not fit.

  19. Do you eat when you are not hungry?
    YES!

  20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
Not as often as I used to. I find myself binge eating when I am depressed or upset and I am usually too far gone to care.

  21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
    No.

  22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
    YES!

  23. Do you eat as a reward?
    No.

  24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
Incidentally, I do, but not as a habit. I had breakfast while filling out the top part of this survey.

  25. What do you normally eat for a meal?
Breakfast is normally cereal (which I need to stop buying over-sweetened and move to shreaded wheat or something healthy). Lunch is leftover dinner or a sandwich. Dinner is usually carbs (rice, pasta, etc.), protien (chicken, tofu, etc.), a bit of veggies (corn, cucumber, etc.), and water.

  26. What type of snacks do you eat?
I like to bring something to work for a 3:00PM snack like a muffin, nuts, or fruit. I really need to get in the habit of bringing something healthy and substantial for a mid-afternoon snack at work to keep me going and to prevent me from getting overly hungry (and less productive) and eating anything I lay my eyes on when I get home.

  27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
I stopped going to the gym a few months ago because I moved and wanted to save the $50/month for a while, but lately I have been biking around the neighborhood especially to Target, Menard's, or The Home Depot if I need to pick up something small. That is about a four-mile round-trip to any of those places. I like to think I go for walks, but that is less often than I would like. I should more often. I did recently sign up for an aikido class and I hope that works out well. If I do like this class (which is at a local high school), I hope to sign up for regular classes at a dojo and go a few times per week.

  28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
    See above.

  29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
I really liked lifting weights at the gym and I have thought about picking up a set of free-weights for home use.

  30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
As I mentioned above, I have a chart to track my goals (-3#/mo.) and compare against my actual weight. I need to keep this posted to remind myself of my goals and to watch what I eat.

  31. Do you have rewards for certain goals?
Not really. Well, buy new clothes out of necessity and make them nice clothes as a reward.

This is not going as well as I hoped I would have time for. I have gone out for a couple walks in the past weeks and tried not eating in my normal, poor habits, but today I weighed in at 275#.

Aikido starts on Wednesday. I am trying to change my mindset overall and I hope a little Taoist teaching can bring me to think in a different way.

Not much else to say.

EDIT: Damn. I thought I was at 275# last time. I just realized I am up four pounds. WTF?
