Gaining weight, but staying in shape?

Something just occurred to me...If you gain weight, but continue to do HIIT cardio and lift weights, how would you get out of shape? I was always under the impression that the heavier you got, the worse shape you would be in? If you continue to run, or do whatever you do, you should get better at these things as you eat over maintenance, correct?

Or, is their some side effect? (lost endurance or something)

A few things could happen:

1) The cardio cancels out your surplus, basically leaving you at maintenance. You gain strength, but body comp stays relatively the same, very very slowly adding muscle and losing fat.

2) Your surplus is maintained, you gain muscle, strength, and endurance.

3) The cardio throws you into deficit(only if the surplus is small), you lose fat and maintain most muscle.

Heavier does not mean worse shape.

How would the HIIT cardio throw you off? I was saying that you would eat over maintenance while doing these things, which means eating more on the cardio days to compensate for the cardio being done. So, you should still gain weight...Right?

Yes you would be gaining muscle and some fat. The cardio would increase your endurance a bit. The reason most don't go HIIT during bulking is because it is very draining and will hinder recovery and since recovery = growth they cut it out. Also most don't go SS cardio because exercise for that long puts your body into a catabolic state, cortisol shoots up, and it makes it more difficult to gain muscle. If looking for optimal muscle gain, its lifting only while eating a surplus. I'm sure however there are splits that work well with 1 day of HIIT and that HIIT would help increase endurance if that is what you are after
