Gaining weight but looking thinner?

Has anyone else ever experienced this? You've obviously gained weight, according to the scale, but you can't help thinking that you LOOK thinner. This has happened to me recently... I've gained about 4 kilograms (8.8lbs) but every time I look at myself in the full-length mirror its obvious that I'm thinner. And I'm pretty positive that the increased weight is NOT muscle weight. Hmm...

Well, regardless, I'm still motivated to get rid of this weight that I've gained. I'm just a little curious as to why I don't look like I did when I weighed this much about a year ago. Are my hormones all messed up or something?

Are you drinking a lot more water now? Perhaps, you were dehydrated and you gained some of the weight in water (which is good, you are getting hydrated) but 8.8 lbs is a heck of a lot.

I don't know about gaining, I know my weight has not changed drastically for a while but my clothes are so loose, and I definetely look a lot leaner now.

deepgreen: no, i've always been drinking a lot of water... but 8.8lbs IS a lot isn't it? i must be hallucinating then, and i'm actually huge. what a frightening thought :(

hajni: have you been exercising? you probably lost fat and gained muscle... the ideal thing that's supposed to happen. :)

You could be gaining core muscle mass, that is the muscles in your trunk, (back, ribcage and abdominals), firming these up and adding mass would make you look fit and "thinner" even though they weigh more than an equal volume of fat.

But this won't necessarily bulk you up the way adding muscle mass to your arms shoulders and legs will.
