Gaining strength

A caloric surplus is required to build muscle but what about strength? Can I effectively lose weight and gain strength without achieving hypertrophy, or does strength only come through bulking?

Strength is a function many factors:
1. CNS (central nervous system) - can your brain tell your muscle to exert a maximum effort, that is fire all muscle fibers simultaneously, the normal tendancy is for your system to hold back to prevent injury and have something left if it needs to do another rep
2. # of muscle fibers in a given muscle
3. size of the muscle fibers in the muscle
4. stength of the joints and connective tissue
Any others I have forgotten?

You can lift progressively heavier weights without gaining significant muscle mass, up to a certain point, but then, unless you are extremely genetically gifted, you will have to add muslce mass to get any stronger.

I think that's a pretty common misconception.

As I've said on these boards before, I am 31, fml and usually weigh around 45 kgs.

I used to train up to 12hrs a day for years, and hopefully heading back toward that soonish. Atthat weight I used to be able do good formed sets of up to an 8rep pyramid set or so of pushups with someone on my back weighing anywhere from 70+ to 100+kgs.
I also carried 90+ kgs of luggage around china ( and if you see their train platforms in the counrty that with India has the worlds biggest population :0 :0:0) you'll understand the site that was.

I think at the end of the day, for real strength, as kgs you can lift per pound of body weight for extended periods and reps ( as opposed to one massive lift alah arnie muscles), it comes down to less carbts and more protein to pack your muscles dense , a good glyco fuel to inject your carbs deep into the muscle fibre and for me, a continued effort.

If you do both, lift big aaand do higher rep lower weight workouts, on a higher carb intake plan, you can effectively build size and strength for anywhere upto 10 weeks. If this is your goal, resting between 10 weeks lots to up cardio and enduro etc, then cycle it in .

cheers

Wow, Blooming Lotus. You exercise for 12 hours a day? And at 45kgs body weight you can do 8 pushups with a 100kg person sitting on your back? You are truly one dedicated, hard working, and genetically gifted woman!;)

maybe she meant 2 hours a day and accidentaly put a 1 in front. lmao 12 hours a day is practically every second you are awake and then you have to eat still.
