Okay, so i'm new to this whole forum thing, and i've never actually been on a forum of any kind before, so anyway, no-one will probably read this, i guess its for me anyways so lets begin!

So, i weigh 165-170lbs and i'm going to the caribbean in around 6 months so i really, really wanna lose 50lbs so i can at least feel comfortable for once!
The cold months are making me lazy(er) though :(

I've tried to lose weight before, but i always give up - i guess i have no movitation or willpower, so time to start again... and not give up this time...

can anybody help at all? any tips? :)?

Welcome to the forums. Look around, especially at the stickied post that are full of great tips and information.

Now for you specificly, I suggest for one week keeping a food journal. Write everything you eat down, we even have a forum section that you could write it here for support and suggestions. After a week, look at what you are eating because you can then make the changes for your weight loss. It's not difficult...just takes focus and knowledge.

I'd love if you would back that up. Atkins isn't exactly for those if you are lazy. To be honest, you aren't going to lose weight if you are lazy. It doesn't matter if you try something like Atkins (which I have strong opinions on cause there is no 'bad' food. It is all about how many calories you take in). You will not be able to keep the weight off and make these lifestyle choices if you don't actually learn the steps needed. I strongly suggest that instead of thinking that carbs or fats or anything has to be removed from your diet forever, do the research.

Wow! Same start weight and same goal for vacation! I'm going on a cruise June 30th and want to lose the same amount of weight. My advice is to be patient and always thing positive. Everyday that you get some sort of exercise and it eat right is progress. In the end it will all pay off! imagine how happy you'll be to wake up the morning of your trip knowing you stuck you your weight loss goals :)

Are you going to post before and progress pictures?

Agree

Agreed. If anything it makes things harder. Its hard to cut something out of your diet. Its better to try a more balanced diet (fruits, veggies, protein, starch, good fats, dairy etc) And keep a journal has helped me so much. You dont realize how much you are actually eating. Use the stickies, check bmi, bmr etc. Find out how much you'll need to eat in order to succesfully lose. :)

What is there to back up? Atkins is one of the most popular diets because it allows you to lose weight by simply cutting out carbs, which is ideal for someone who is lazy/doesn't want to exercise.

Perhaps it's you who needs to do the research as it's been proven that people on diets made up primarily of protein stay full for longer periods of time and consequently end up consuming less calories. It's not a hard lifestyle choice to adapt to and arguably healthier to boot. Nobody ever said high carb foods were bad, but they have a lot more potential for weight gain. That's just a fact. That doesn't mean you can't consume some complex carbs, but stuff like white bread and pizza has to go if you want to lose weight. There's no argument to be had here.

I know having a mod position here must make you think you're speaking from some position of authority or whatever (or maybe you lost some weight and think you have all the answers), but it's obvious you're input on the subject is as ignorant as it is arrogant. And for that reason, I'm going to end this conversation and leave you to your own devices. (personal attack removed)
Just a shame for the people looking for help.

Research done.

Sorry that you have an attitude with my words. There was no attack but you can't just throw out that you can do Atkins if you are lazy. Sorry but you can't cut a food group out and eat all you want of anything else. It doesn't work that way.

As the mayo clinic pointed out, you are going to lose weight by reducing calories. You still have to monitor yourself. Which would you rather do? Cut out a food type completely for the rest of your life or learn moderation in a way that you can eat right all the time?

You're right.

People on diets made up primarily of protein don't stay full for longer periods and consequently end up consuming less calories

Atkins doesn't work. Everybody who vouches for it is wrong.

My diet made up primarily of protein had nothing to do with me just losing 50 pounds.

Im with Jericho here. You can eat entirely protein based meals, but unless you eat less calories than you use, you will not loose weight.

Protein does help you feel full, but not necessarily enough to make you loose weight. Generally its a good idea to have vegetables or fruit to get vitamins and fibre if nothing else. I find staying away from processed food helps a lot though :)

I ate to my heart's content and never went hungry.

The calories in/out thing is pretty obvious. But not all calories are created equal. Some are going to spike your insulin, do a poor job of keeping you full and even make you hungrier. If you admit that protein does the best job of keeping you full, then obviously you admit that it's the best way to reduce calories and consequently lose weight.

Everybody should see this documentary: (Has to remove, as this contains advertising)

Your statement is flawed. Just because protein keeps you full does not mean that it is the best way to lose weight. I can eat a meal made up of 4000 calories of steak. I will feel full but I'll still gain weight.

Not all calories are equal..true..but the total still equals the total. 1000 calories of protein and a 1000 calories of sugar is still 1000 calories.

The problem I have is a documentary isn't the whole story. It gets edited. It is altered or shown in whatever light the creator is hoping to reach. I take medical studies and places like the Mayo Clinic over a documentary on this subject.

I'm sorry Hallo that your thread has become this way.

Hello Hallo-There

When we are doing something that we love, we are attracted to it, we are self-motivated and do not need any external motivation. Self-motivation, somewhat obviously, is the most powerful. People can tell us all day that we should do this or we ought to do that, but only once you decide to lose weight, then it will happen.
We avoid what we don't love and we will tend to do anything to move away from it - but how far away is away.
What we have to do, in order to have this work permanently, is find a way to love letting go of the weight. NLP has a number of answers that people looking to lose weight would find interesting and useful - meantime try this.
We create pictures in our head. One way our brain knows what we like and what we don't like -can include the 'location' and the 'proximity' of those pictures.
First of all, get a picture in your head, of an activity that you love doing, perhaps a hobby.(notice how that makes you feel). Take note of where that picture is in terms of right, left, up down, right in front of you. Also note where it is in terms of near or far.
Now scrub that picture - blank it out.
Now get a picture of a yourself continuing on your weight journey and making sensible new choices about foods. (notice how that makes you feel).
Remember, if you do what I am about to suggest then you may find a permanent change in your motivation to continue your weight journey.
Got something. Notice if the picture is in a different place to the thing that you loved to do?
If this is true for you then...
just in your head - imagine grabbing hold of the picture of you on your weight journey - just in your minds eye...
and imagine physically pulling it over until it locks into the very same place as the thing you love to do. Hear it slide and lock into place. Clunk.
Now blank the screen.... and then do it again.
Do it 7 times for me.

Now, you may notice that you feel entirely differently about your weight journey.
There are many, many more secrets that someone trained in these skills can help with - and it is not about calories and diets!

I wish you well.

Heya

This thread is not going anywhere and seems to be degenerating into shit flinging fest.

Proven fact, you need to eat less calories than you use to loose weight - regardless of what you eat (carbs, lettuce, meat, other).

Protein does make you feel more full and satisfied, however often the insulin spike leaves people feeling cravy/hungry due to lack of carbs if they are not consumed with it, thus resulting in overeating still.

No weight loss diet is 'easy' or lazy by any means, and if it were, does it really matter? Is it not the result that matters more than the means ?

At this point i'm closing the thread because its not at all constructive, there is no agreement, or agree to disagree here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions :)
