Frustrating!!!

Hi, i am new here, the posts are good, very helpful.

i am 43, i began working out in mid august (2006) and dieting end sept. i have lost 22 pounds (i was 5'5 1/2, 186 pounds and now i am 164), BUT, i seem to be stuck!

I go to the gym 4-5 times per week and i do the elliptical (with the arms) for 30 minutes and then treadmill or the other elliptical for 30 more minutes each time.

out of the 4-5 days, 1 day is cardio only and the other days are 30 min cardio, strength training upper body then 30 more min cardio 2 days and then the other
2 days 30 min cardio, strength training lower body then 30 minutes more cardio.

i have cut out sweet drinks somewhat, i used to have 1 per day, now i have 1 every 3 or 4 days, i cut out nightime snack (that was tea and 2 cookies), i cut out any other cookies, etc, no chips with lunch....what am i missing? i think i still eat too much for dinner, i did not change that.......

i should weigh like 125 and that is my goal, but i am feeling very discouraged that i am working really hard and i have not seen any results for a few weeks now.

any suggestions?

thanks so much!

Mary

Well it seems like you got a good start but I am sure there are places we can smarten up with your diet and your training.

Post a detailed diet with caloric intake average for suggestions.

As far as your workouts I would keep the cardio and strength training separate.

Read some of the stickies (the threads at the top of each forum section). And if desire post more detail about your diet.

I'm no expert but i'd say cut back on fatty foods, and start eating like a 125 pound person (calorie wise). When I first came here I was in the 187's and now im about 167 while being 6'1". That's what i've been doing eating less out food, and excercising more. My goal is to drop down to 150 and for now one thing I don't understand is how in 20 pounds I don't see TOO much of a difference but I figure it's a slow process.

I am no expert either but it seems like you still snack on some fatty food. It's really hard but try to cut back on those. Make Salad your food of choice and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

BTW, GOOD job on losing those weight so far. Keep it up. You are doing great. Just fine tune it a bit.

I think you should switch to bulking for a couple of months. Some added muscles will help you burn more calories to cut through that plateau... or go back over your diet and cut some more calories out. I don't know what else to suggest though.

Your muscle building could be adding some weight or even bulk which makes your fatty areas look worse than they are. When I lost 80 Lbs, I stuck with only cardio until I burned off all the unwanted fat, then I added in the strength training.

I don't know how you eat, but now that you weigh less and burn less calories just moving from place to place, your calorie intake may have caught up to the calories you burn.

You have two options- take in less calories, or increase the intensity of your workouts. If you stick to the same speed and same routine, after awhile, it won't be as affective. If you aren't already, push yourself a little more on your workouts.
