From obese to athletic in less than a year. Dream or reality?

Right now I'm still considered obese but I'm working hard at it and, if all goes as planned, by the end of the year I'll be at an optimal weight.
This all sounds great, but it still isn't enough. I need that by April - May '08 to reach a physical form that would allow me to join the Police Academy.
Do you think this could be done or am I just dreaming here? I'm positive that by 2009 it can be done but I don't really fancy losing another year.

if you stuck to it, and trained proper, i have no doubt at all you could be in pretty darn good physical ability by next april. ive seen couch to 5k programs that worked in 12 weeks. the amount of time it will require does depend partially on how obese you are to start, and how much work you are willing to put in on a weekly average basis, but 1 year is a lot of time to get in pretty good shape. heck, ive seen some of my athletes drop a minute or more off their mile time in the course of one season. some of our greatest athletes have run times that were 3 minutes faster in the two mile run after one year of training. thats going from a person who was finishing near to dead last, to a person who was competitive and winning some of the races.

your mentality and dedication is what will determine if you make it or not

It's definitely doable.
I have been following the story of some folks who are travelling around the US on bikes who started at 340 and 280 lbs.
Here is their website, if you are interested in following their progress:

It's totally doable, I went from around 220 to 177 (currently) in 6 months and I'll probably move my goal weight down to 165 or 160 before bulking up a little. When I started I could barely bench 55 pounds and without developing much muscle mass, thanks to an increase in hypertrophy I'm able to bench about 120. Not bodybuilder status, but not bad for 6 months. For the first time in my life I can do pull ups and push ups with relative ease.

Go for it!

Thats a very realistic and achievable goal! It will require hard work, but if you are going to join the police academy anyways, the harder you work now the better that will be for you! I am currently on my way to achieving an 80 pound loss in 8 months. 53 gone already after 4.5 months and right on track. And believe you me, after 25+ years of actively trying and failing, if I can do it, anyone can. It's not as much rocket science as I originally thought, but it is hard work.

I wish you the best! Keep poking around here in the group and ask questions, maybe start a diary (if you haven't already). For me being part of this fantastic community has made the difference. Maybe it will help you too!
