Hello Hello,

I am new to this site - actually kinda found it by accident while trying to research something. After reviewing it, I realized how much of help it seems to be for people and place to get accurate and helpful tips from real people who are going through or have been through the same struggle.

So here I am,

I am a 23 year old guy from Canada. I am about 6'1 and weigh about 223lbs. My BMI right now reads 29.42 - so I am overweight and very near to obese - not the greatest feeling. At my biggest I weight 250lbs and I am looking to eventually weigh around 170.

Starting fresh at the first of next week - really I am just going to be looking for tips on eating habits (because that truly is my bigges problem) as well as exercise tips. Look forward to meeting some people during the journey!

Welcome to the forum!

The stickies around here have a lot of helpful tips, and tons of GENUINE quality info.
Good luck! :smash:

Thanks for the welcome.
I am planning starting on Monday. I started a new job that has a gym in the building for free. I intend on doing a combination of the gym there and also I intend on starting P90x. A friend of mine, who took a personal training course, said that the p90x was a good way to go - that it was actually quite well balanced.

Does anyone have any experience with that program they could share. Also any tips for getting started - anything I should begin doing in prep or do along with what I have planned? Obviously there is an eating plan to follow with P90 which I also intend on following, but really I am up for suggestions!

Thanks a lot.

Hi and welcome.

The first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

The next thing I'd suggest is checking out the various sticky posts in the exercise area of the forum (Weight Loss Through Exercise - Weight Loss Forum). There are some very good posts on exercise, both cardio/aerobic and on incorporating weight lifting into your exercise plans.

I'd also suggest starting a diary in the weight loss diary area (Weight Loss Diary - Weight Loss Forum) as well as reading and participating in other diaries. This is a good way to make updates to your progress and to get support from others. It helps to find the diaries of people who have successfully lost weight (or are losing weight) and reading through them as well. Following the diaries of those who have been successful is both inspiring and informative.

Finally, I'd say you should read as much as you can of the posts on the board, especially anything that's marked "sticky". There is a ton of good information around here and a lot of times questions that new folks have has already been answered very thoroughly - so do take the time to look around and read. :)

Hope that helps you to get started.

Welcome fellow Canadian! I'm sure you'll find this forum very helpful- I sure have. Whereabouts are you from?

Thanks for all the information Kara!
I have been making my way around the site but there is certainly a lot of information to take in.
I am going to start some of the threads you recommended to me today!

Yes, I grew up in Alberta, but I was actually born in Middleton, NS so the east coast is in my blood ;)

I am from the valley too, very near to there.
Living in Hali right now but I grew up very close to Middleton

chunkmonster2,

One of the most parts of fat loss is to adopt new habits. My son had type diabetes from age 4. We could not have sweet stuff in the house anymore, just because it was a health danger for him. We all ate better because of him.

So, making eating right into a habit is the way to go.

What is it about being overweight that is such a problem for you?

That's actually a pretty good question.

Um - health wise, I am perfectly fine! I have not really had much for health problems -- anything related to weight anyways. When I was young my mother had a big focus on me and my brothers developing diabetes since her father had passed of it, but we were all quite healthy kids.

I have various reasons actually. I would like to feel better. I have been smaller then what I am right now. I initially got big when I was a young kid. During my early highschool years I managed to drop from 250 to 175 in quite a hurry really, unfortunately it wasn't in a healthy way. Once I got back on a good track though I remained at about 180 through highschool (I wasn't in good shape really, not muscular at all just thinner)

ANyways -- one main reason is I know I felt better when I was thinner - I was able to do more. I would like to have that feeling again. I never ate healthy back then either so I imagine with adding healthy eating and healthy living it would be that much better.

Also I have very vain reasons. I don't wanna be big - like many people I don't like the looks of excess fat and I would rather be in good shape for image purposes too.. haha I am not to afraid to admit it.

But there are various reasons motivating me.

I think it is great your family collectively made a change for your son - that really shows your family is close and caring. It is always unfortunate when young ones have to struggle through those kinds of things but it sounds like he has a supportive family
