Free Weights

I was listening to a podcast today. They said how free weights can be better because of the stabilizing muscles are being used compared to how in a machine they are not. There are some exercises where you need to use a bench. Won't the bench act like a machine in a way or is it, the lesser of two evils?

That's right. I believe using free weights is much better because it brings in the stabilisers. In regards to the bench, it's not really a machine, as Karky said, it's just something you lay on. For example, you're better off doing bench press rather than chest press.
