? for those that have lost a lot of weight: cold sensitivity

This is a question mainly geared towards people who have lost a lot of weight, but if anybody else knows, feel free to chime in.

I have developed an acute sensitivity to the cold since I've lost a lot of weight. I've had a sensitivity to cold before, but it is MUCH more extreme now. I'm bloody miserable in temperatures that others consider comfortable.

So, is my body just needing to adjust to the lighter load? Will it mellow out? What can I do to help regulate my thermostat beyond layers of clothing?

Steve,
You need to tell that to my wife, i told her the same thing and she told me to go to hell.

Seriously, yes i get cold very easy and i hate it.

Steve,
You need to tell that to my wife, i told her the same thing and she told me to go to hell.

I'm sure she'd be receptive of a strange feller from the Internetz telling her to let her husband abuse her sexually.

Tell her to send me an email and I'll help a brotha out.

:p

I've noticed I handle the cold better now. It may have something to do with the fact that I do all of my running outside so my body is kind of used to it anyways, but I'll go out on days where its less than 10 degrees out and go for a long run, and when I'm not running and I'm outside I do just fine with the cold.

I actually haven't turned the heat on in my apartment once yet this winter.

Lot's and lot's and lot's of no holds bar animalish sex.

Or so I hear.

You mean more? Oh darn. :reddevil:

I can handle heat better now that I could when I was heavier. Cold, not so much.

I am out and out freezing now.

I never once was ever one of those people and now I am completely frozen everywhere.

Ill take it though- better than weighing 50+lbs more....

I'm cold whereever I go, and my dad thinks its fun to have the house at 70 degress (which is freezing to me). I've gotten used to it, kinda, I ignore it more than I did before...but thankfully I'm never hot anymore, which I hated because It made me feel like i was old (i'm still in my teens)

My mother would tell you that it's for two reasons -- less fat to keep you warm and you're probably eating less red meat, which in macrobiotics equals your metabolism (and therefore heat) is working less making you colder.

Some of us that have insulin problems might tell you it's your blood sugar going down.

I can tell when I need to eat, when I start getting abnormally cold (never mind if I'm sick, since I tend to get ridiculously cold when I'm sick).

I am definitely more sensitive to the cold now that I have lost weight (around 45 pounds). I used to usually be hot and I would sweat easily, now my hands and feet are always freezing. The only thing that saves me at night is my honey keeping me warm :)

Don't think I'm more sensitive to the cold now but it's hard to tell when it's -30 Celsius outside lol, it's just frigging cold no matter what.

Exactly. Really, what's the difference between -24 and -30°C? Six degrees of separation :D (that was sooooo lame!)

I would think eventually your bodies will adapt and you won't feel so cold. I'm not very fat at all, and I'm stoked all the time.

I have always left my bedroom window open in the winter, and I still get hot. It's much worse when there is a guy generating 80,000 BTUs lying beside me. I can barely keep the sheet on me I get so hot ...

So I don't think it's entirely dependent on the fact you don't have as much subcutaneous resilience :)

I don't get hot as much now that i've lost some weight. I think it has to do with my belly not being full of food all the time,

When I lost 60lbs three years ago, [sadly it came back on :(] I was FREEZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think it is just the fat keeps you warm. Just like anamals that live in the cold. Always have a lot more fat on there bodies then ones in the armer areas.

I have the same problem. I've also had more colds and bouts of flu this winter than I've ever had in my life. A lot of the old diet-sabateur types (you know who I mean!) have told me it's because of the weight loss and my body has had too much to deal with, but I'm not sure that's right.

I haven't found any way of kicking the cold sensitivity beyond finding the loveliest hooded robe that I wrap myself in when I get home. It's gigantic, super-fleecy and soft, and I feel like floating off to sleep on a cloud of fluffiness every time I put it on.

I think it's kind of saved my life! :)

If you think your fat is keeping you warm, then how can I be warm and have very little fat? I keep my home at 20°C (68°F) and that's plenty hot for me.

But I don't get cold in the cold weather very easily and I don't get hot in hot weather very easily. My body adapts pretty quickly and efficiently. My body's normal temperature is subnormal. I usually run around 96°F (35.5°C).

I think that perhaps what is going on is the weight loss has thrown off your body's ability to "thermoregulate", and given enough time, it will ultimately stabilize.

I hope you're right. I was so bloody cold all day yesterday that I was exhausted by the end of the day.
