for muscle growth, is there any advantage to lifting heavier?

Say if you were doing 80% of your max, by 10 reps of 20 lbs for whatever exercise, if you upped it to 10 reps of 30 lbs (by gaining muscle strength with 1-4 reps for a while). Would there be any advantage to muscle growth?

I'm just wondering if going into a strength training stage for a month or so, and then going back into muscle hypertrophy would be a good idea.

How often do you see in the gym the bigger guys moving less weight than the smaller guys? Not often I'll bet (unless you are working out in some PL gym). Strength gains are key to size gains.

yeah, with lower reps you improve the CNS too, you make it able to recruit more of monitor units, which in a way means more of the muscle is recruited to lift. So getting an effective nervous system is key to gaining both size and strenght.

And you can gain size by lifting heavy too, its not just the added strenght that comes in handy when you go back to hyp ranges. Eating a surplus and lifting heavy will make you grow.

Why not do both? Do 1 - 4 reps on the first one or two exercises. Then do your reps (6, 8, 10, 12, 15 whatever) on the following 3 to 5 exercises. You can effectively train both.

Another example.

On the first exercise you can work up to a heavy set of 1 - 4. then drop the weight and do sets of 10, 12, whatever.

This way you can effectively train both. without having to sacrifice one or the other by doing different " Training Phases."

Not at all. Because you could probably lift 50lbs (guess) 1-4 times. Why would you lift a 30lbs 4 times if your goal is to lift it 10.

If you can lift 20lbs - 12 times, then you should be able to lift 30lbs - 10 times. So, why would you lift 30lbs only a few times?

Or do you mean that you can lift 20lbs - 12 times, and want to be able to lift 50lbs - 10times (or some other wt that is much larger than 20lb)?

As in - if you lift heavy enough that you can only do 1-4 reps, then you will gain enough strength to lift that wt 10 times?

he is talking about doing low rep strenght work to be able to handle bigger weights when he goes back to the high rep training.

Now he is doing 12 reps or whatever. Then he is thinking about doing low reps (1-4) for a while so that when he goes back to the 12 reps he will be able to do more, and thus get more hyp from it.

Well, I've tried but I can't. The most I can get out of 30 lbs is like 3 or 4.
