Flexibility

How important is it? How many people take time out to do something specific to enhance their flexibility?

Well, personally, I do very little stretching. Most of my stretching comes from the full range of movement I use when weight training. I also do some light stretching after working a body part. But I don't actually take the time just for stretching. I actually would like to be a bit more flexible. I don't mean twist myself into a pretzel, but more flexible that I am now. How much more, is really the question. I don't think you want to over stretch your muscles either. Of course, I have not done a lot of research on this, so maybe I should just shut up until I do

"It is extremely important! Not only stretching but also myofascial release which is the more effective way at releasing adhesions in muscles."

oh my goodness. I have no idea what this means! Laymans terms!!

Stretching is important. There are debates about how and when to do it though. Personally I recommend you do a 5 minute warm-up, do your fitness program, THEN stretch as your cool down.

The muscle are warmer and more flexible. This leads to less injury. Never bounce stretch (like when trying to touch your toes... never bounce down and up and then try to reach them on the second or third bounce.) Did that make sense? :p

I used to teach yoga and I can tell you stretching is amazing and makes you feel wonderful if you do it regularly. You can tell a difference when you stop doing it after being really good with it for a few weeks.

You feel tight. I never did a major routine (except in my yoga classes). I just did a stretch for each body part and held it for 30 seconds.

You may want to look into a foam roller regimen and also "Magnificant Mobility" by Mike Robertson and Eric Cressey.

Thanks,

I am actually quite interested in yoga but I'm always intimidated by it since it seems like everyone knows what they're doing already. There is no "beginner" yoga at my gym. Just a yoga class and then a die hard class too for the "seasoned" pretzals :)

I use to be like you an never stretch. Then I started doing basic Yoga stretching and some Pilates which is heavily focused around stretching and breathing. Every since I started I have seen a huge improvement in the way my muscles feel and I have much less joint or muscle pain.

Therefore, my vote is that stretching is a great thing and I recommend it. I never start a workout without it anymore.
