Fitness beginner don't know where to begin!

Hello I am a 5'9" 193 lb male trying to lose the weight I have on during the years. I don't know where to begin other than to not eat as much, eat better. I have a lot of free weights but I don't know i good starting place to use them and I don't have money for a gym. Any advice?

this is a common problem for begginers. the web is filled with free information for you to use.
i can tell you this website has a lot of very good content for you to use. you can also watch video tutorials on youtube.com but my best suggestion for you will be to have a personal trainer coming to your home once a week. having a proffesional teaching you the basics would be the best advice for you.
you can tell your PT what are your goal and build togather a long term strategy. have a meeting once a week and ask him for "home work".
it wont cost as much as a monthly subscription at the gym and i think it will be more efficient.
good luck :)

The OP doesn't have the money for a gym so he won't have the money for a PT.

Lots of full body exercise like squats, lunges, presses and pulls. Supplement this with some running.

Try following the workouts here

Well done as getting in the mindset to start exercising is usually the hardest thing!
Maybe sign yourself up for a shortish run like a 5K in a couple of months to give yourself some motivation and something to work towards. Or you could sign up for a charity run or triathlon and find other people who are doing it to train with. Both excellent and free ways to start and continue exercising.

I completely understand!!

You have the right idea!! And really all you need are hand weights to get started on a great exercise program. What were the pounds of the weights? You really don't need a gym or a huge space to get started you can do an entire workout in your living room. Make sure you start with the large muscle groups first (chest, shoulders, back) then work the small ones last (biceps and triceps) here are some basic exercises to get you started
: Push ups - 3 sets of max reps (as many as you can)
: Shoulder press (make sure the arms are kept at 90degrees and you don't lock the elbows at top. do 3 sets of 15
: Rows ( stand with feet shoulder width apart bend at hips to a 45 degree angle, hang arms with weights straight down, and row up squeezing shoulder blades together.
: Basic bicep curls - keep elbows in ribcage curl all the way up and back down. make sure that you don't rock your upper body focus only on the movement of the biceps. to this 3 sets of 15
:Triceps - stand with hands over head one weight in both hands and slowly lower behind the head bending only at the elbows. repeat this motion 15 times for 3 sets
I really hope this helps

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I have 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 lb weights about 4 a piece so I can make a little heavier weight! I do like the sandbag exercises on your site, Coach Palfrey, and you too Kindra with the beginner tips and exercise! I started a food log and an exercise log. Hopefully I will be able to get up to speed quickly!

Hy there!

I am new to this forum, but maybe i can give you some useful advice, since i`ve had personal trainer for more than two months now, i lost all together about 20lb since august.
The most important thing, which we usualy do not care so much about it, is food. Unfortunately, nowadys we have less and less time to eat healthy and nutrisious food and we (me too) are eating more and more quick prepared food, so called junk food.
Now i think, there is bunch of material online you can check about health food and diets, and so on and on... But actually i can tell you one simple rule i `ve been practising previous two and a half months. I try to eat like this:

Before breakfast: Fruits (only time of the day i eat fruits)

Breakfast: QUALITY carbohidrates, combined with proteins, healthy fats and vitamins

Snack: peanuts butter, or someting simmilar (quality fats) for example almonds, bannana also does it

Lunch: carbohidrates and proteins (for example chicken brests with brown pasta)

Snack: for example- 250g of curd

dinner: ONLY PROTEINS- for example tuna (from a can)

Try to avoid food with high glicemic index and pick food with low one instead. More information about this, you can find here:

This is the basic sistem i am practicing, but ofcourse there is much more informations about this.
Second most important thing is QUALITY training, the best is if you combine aerobic and unaerobic training together. If you need more detailed info you can always send me PM, i will be glad to help, since i had the same problems not so long ago.

regards,
