First Time Doing HIIT

Today I woke up earily and did my first HIIT session. I ate a yogurt and a drank lass of orange juice before heading out. I was planning on doing 30sec jog 30sec sprint 30sec jog 30sec walk for six intervals. Aftering warming up by jogging about 5 mins I started. After my first two sets I was really feeling it and by my 3rd I was ready to give up. I started cheating a little by walking more and jogging less but I kept the sprints the same legnth. I did slow down during my sprint towards the end but I tried my best to go all out. When I was done I felt horrible. It felt like my heart would exploden had a sharp pain in my lungs, was gasping for air, had a horrible head ache, thought I was gonna pass out and was sure I was gonna throw up. I had lmost a mile walk home for cool down. The entire way I felt horrible. 10 mins after I got home I felt fine and normal.

So advice or comments? I really want to do it right and I felt kinda bad for cheating during the rest sessions.

You did it right!!! You SHOULD feel like that after a correctly done HIIT session! You are depleting the oxygen supply in your body, which causes all those symptoms you mentioned, and as soon as your body replaces the oxygen those symptoms will all go away. There is no hard and fast rule for everyone at every level of fitness that the low intensity intervals have to be any particular length. They should be just long enugh to allow you to perform the next high intensity interval at the same speed as the previous one(s).

Why did you feel horrible?!?!?!!?!!? I want to start doing HIIT too...
I guess because it was hard work. Like I expected to feel tired but I felt physically sick. But based on dswither's post I guess that's normal.

And it's not as easy as it sounds...like when I first started people reading these forums I heard a lot of people say that but I never really understood until I did it. Good luck.

That is exactly why HIIT is so effective. In a short time you can tax yourself to the max and as your fitness level progresses you can reduce the duration of the low intensity intervals and actually get the same max stimulation in less time.

my experiences with HIIT did the same for me, except that I got a runners high shortly after I caught my breath. I got my husband to join me with this, too, and the same happened to him. It is a great addition to my routine. Although I have to say, now I actually get butterflies in my stomach now when I'm about to start, I know how much it is going to hurt (I have been doing Tabata sprints), but I also know the benefits. I only do this once a week.
