first post

ok so me and my GF who are both 22 had decided to start hitting the local apt gym until we decide to get memberships at a "real" gym such as gold's or 24/hr fitness.... i'm 6' 4" about 210lbs and she is 5' 7" about 145-150ish. like every other girl on the planet she is trying to lose weight/slim down/ get toned and i am looking to build mainly my chest and flatten my stomach/abs.

this gym has treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, free weights, and various machine weights...

i'm looking for word from the wise-

i want to flatten my stomach and gain about 10lbs in upper body muscle

she is looking to loose about 20-25lbs overall but concentrating on her stomach and arms

i am considerably athletically active and i believe i can start with intermediate + workouts...

HOW SHOULD WE GET STARTED?

Hey, Seth--welcome to the forum!

First things first, there's no such thing as "spot reducing"--any fat you're trying to get rid of will come off in its own way, in its own time, as you increase your activity and restructure your body.

Since your goals involve more building up, I'd focus predominantly on weight training but throw in a little cardio for flexibility and heart health. Cardio is stuff like the bikes, treadmills, etc. There are lots of different things you can do for weight training--check out the Weight Training subforum here to get some ideas. You should consider a full body workout--it always looks a little funny to have a dude with big ole' arms and nothing going on on the bottom half! :D

Your GF should focus on about half and half cardio and weight training. She will tell you that she doesn't want bulky muscles, tell her to read around the forum here for reasons why that just doesn't happen. Cardio will help trim the fat off and in a couple months, you'll both be rockin'!

thank you for the quick reply.... i understand that a full body workout is important to keep everything proportioned. but the funny thing is is that i have everything going on below and nothing up top.. i very very frequently ride mountain bikes and in the past ALL of the sports i've been involved in have been centered around lower body strength-(bmx racing, competitive paintball, skateboarding, mountain biking, etc). so i have very muscular legs and almost no upper body strength.. my arms have been getting much bigger than they used to be but i still have a "bird chest" haha as some say and i small "pooch".. not nearly as flat as it was when i was in my teens.

my GF wants to loose some weight everywhere but i honestly think i just need to work on my upper body in the gym. my everyday mountain bike riding and paintball seems to be keeping my legs being the best looking thing on my body.

thanks, seth

Gotcha--I didn't realize you were already "halfway there"!

Bench/incline bench, row machine, lat pulldown, delt/fly movements, shrugs, chinup/pullups are all good starter movements for upper body. You might want to check out some of the Journals here in the journal section--find someone else who is attempting to work on the same goals and then copy their workouts!
