First 10k, Serious help!

Signed myself up for my first 10k run for cancer, this was purely because of a friend with cancer plus i wanted the motivation to get fit.

However, ive never ran an event before, im also very un-fit, im not over weight as such, i think its just very poor cardio, i have trouble running for short distances....

im not aiming to come first, im not aiming to be near the front i just want to finish! Im in need of some desperate help for me to train, i have 12 weeks until the event...

Help will be very muchly appreciated..Thankyouuu :(:(

distance

For the first week or so get running a set distance you no you can achieve then once you have been able to do this a few times increase the distance by say quarter of a mile maybe more that you choice.

Keep doing this and before you no it you will be running miles with out stopping

But don't increase the miles to much, and be careful to not injure yourself allow for rest days in between

okay thankyou, the problem is, its a real short distance, i can run/jog probably around 400 meters before being very out of breathe..

Hi JBarker,

It's great you've signed up for this 10km charity event. Signing up for things such as this are a great way to get fit and keep motivated. It gives you a real goal to strive for.

As previously said, just start running what you're comfortable with and steadily increase your distance. Depending on your current running ability and capacity, and the fact you have 12 weeks, I would recommend running at least 4-5 times per week and allowing a couple of days for recovery.
If you have not ran much in the past, it's very likely you'll pull up really sore from your first coouple of runs, so just take it slow for the first few outings.
In the later weeks, hopefully you will be steadily running and have a routine, but if the 10km event is on a Sunday for example, try and run close to 10km on the previous 2 Sundays and then keep to your program during the week. It will really help to prepare your body.
If you want anymore information, feel free to check out my website... I've got a lot of good info there...
Hope it helps.
