"Fever" after exercise: should I worry?

Dear all,

I hope anyone can help me with this.

Yesterday night I did a 1.5 mile run, afterwards some crunches, squats, and stretching.

About an hour after finishing, I suddenly got fever-like symptoms: very cold, shivering, cold/tingly hands and fingers, fast heart rate. After sleeping, all was back to normal. (So it's not the flu.)

Though I'm used to running very short distances, this run was twice as long as I usually run non-stop. I didn't feel exhausted afterwards though, and felt I had energy left.

I searched a bit and I found that runners sometimes have this problem after increasing the distance. Could this, on a smaller scale, be similar? Or maybe it's a result of bad cooling down?

Does anyone (maybe the experts?) know the cause of this, and whether it's harmful? It sorta got me worrying.

Hi!

I was doing an internet search tonight for the very same thing. I have suffered from this for 6 years now and it has ruined me from working out. I am planning on starting up again this new year as I really need it for my mental health.

I am 41 and plagued with all sorts of health issues for my age. I have a physical job that requires me to stand on my feet all day. I get fevers when I work a lot all day too. I get very achy that feels like i have the flu too. I have been to doctors and specialists and none seem to know why or even care to be quite honest.

I would love to find out too. I suffer from fibromyalgia and I also have smoldering multiple myeloma. I am being watched for the myeloma and they dont think it's related. But I do have a lot of inflammation in my body becasue of it.

I would love to find out. If you would like to chat off line my email is (REMOVED) I would love to find a whole slew of folks and maybe we can find the answer. Working out isn't very fun and add this to the mix and no wonder I haven't been to the gym in 4 years.

xo

I'm sorry to hear that, and see how frustrating it must be... Couldn't the doctors tell you what it is? Of course, if it persists, I will see one about it as well. Since it only happened just now, I was hoping to get a suggestion on here too.

To try to help you: I think physicians should be able to work out an exercise and/or diet plan fitted for your condition. I wouldn't just go and exercise in your case, but consult someone.

For properness' sake, and with all due respect, I think my situation is different. I am an otherwise healthy young man with no history of health issues besides overweight, I exercise regularly and feel good with it.

Seems to me to be 2 very different situations but, here is my take on them, as always internet advice should generally be ignored in favor of actual physicians advice.

Dietrying: I wouldnt worry much about it. Shivers, constricting the bloodflow to exteriors of your body and then pumping blood around fast to get you burning and warming you up again is your bodys way of telling you that it is pissed off because it feels abused :) other ordinary reactions inclide vomiting (due to the body not wanting to waste a single drop of blod on food) and other enticing activities :) in general, things that happen after abusing your body and subsides again after some rest should be considered part of your body being pissed, nothing more :) the more you get used to abusing your body the less it'll do that.

I've overseen the training of some odd 3-400 artists (rope climbing, line walking, trapez swinging ones) and without fault they have all had shivers, vomited etc. the first couple of months and whenever their training regime increased noticeably :)

That said, if it continues for an appreciable amount of time, talk to a physician, it can never hurt :)

Makeupdiva: I would just, really.... strongly urge you to talk it over with your doctor before undertaking any sort of training regime, and perhaps also a physiotherapist. I'm not up to speed on the latest research on fibromyalgia but the last thing I read included a lot of words about it having more to do with the CNS than muscular or skeletal system which might impact what exercise would be good for you, but Id definately talk to your physician or find a physician that specializes in that. But.. i'd anyways.. make sure to take my physicians advice over any internet advice :)

Thanks Clever plant. That reassured me a lot. I haven't had it since my last post, but I haven't been pushing myself as far since then either. So I suppose your theory could apply to me.
