Fat loss vs. muscle gain.

I was reading in another thread that building muscle and losing fat simultaneously is pretty much impossible. I did a little more research and found a lot of info out there that supports this info. I would personally like to lose fat and gain muscle but I am not sure what is the best route to go. I have a physically demanding job and cannot afford to lose too much of my current muscle mass if I focus on fat loss alone.

Does anyone have any suggestions or more info on this?

If you have a physically demanding job then I'd guess that in a mild calorie deficiency you won't lose muscle mass at a noticeable rate. Keep an eye on your protein intake.

Perhaps aim for a 3-500 cal/day deficit and you'll drop mostly fat.

The problem is that my job is very demanding at times but overall I do not burn many calories. I'm an EMT so there are times when I may sit around for hours. Patients can be very heavy at times and I need as much strength as possible to ensure the safety of patients and myself. It's a tricky situation. I don't think my body burns many calories to begin with. I need to drop down to around 1200 calories before losing any weight and it's only about 2 pounds a week.

From what I've heard/ can gather, some muscle loss is pretty much inevitable in a calorie deficit unless you're very overweight. Weight training (I reckon part of your job could be included in that) will minimise but not eliminate that. Personally, I plan to lose the weight and then see what I think of my muscles, and possibly work on them then.
