Fat Loss or Muscle First?

Right now I'm clinically obese. I need to lose about 35 pounds to be healthy. I'm working out at home with just what I have. Myself, dumbells, exercise ball and the pavement. I have very low energy levels (fibro, chronic fatigue, chronic infections, etc) but I REALLY want and need to lose weight.

Is it better to work on growing muscle first or to work on losing fat?

Muscle eats fat.... Simple as that

Well, maybe not that simple, but it is very well documented that building lean muscle mass in the body, such as your legs, stomach, back and chest muscles will increase your metabolism and keep it pumped 24 hours a day. This will GREATLY help your weight loss efforts. It made such a difference to me. I did steady state aerobics daily for years with little or no success in actual weight loss and a slimmer waist. Now that I have added weight training to my routine not only has the weight been coming off, but I feel 300X better than ever in my life. Not to mention my waist size has dropped my 8 inches!!!!

So as for your question, building muscle will help you to lose fat. Bottom line.

Hmmmm

Can't see how that could hinder your leg training efforts. I walk every single day for at least 1.5 hours. Part of that is a daily 1 hour power walk from work - home. Then I still continue to do my squats and leg exercises later on. I see no problem whatsoever in walking 60 minutes a day and also doing leg training. Walking is the most basic exercise our bodies are literally designed to do. The fact we dont do it enough is probably the biggest problem gripping our culture. Walking everyday is a bonus, I would not consider it an alternative to strength training, simply a helath friendly mode of transportation.

Building muscle does not burn all that many calories. Weight lifting burns a lot of calories with the combined effects of the energy expenditure while training, and the heightened calorie burn after the session from the anaerobic work.

Losing weight should be your first priority. Part of the process of losing weight should consist of a solid nutritional strategy, cardio, and resistance training.

The resistance training is not thrown into the mix so you build muscle. Because guess what. You can't build muscle while you are in a calorie deficit. And if you are trying to lose weight, you MUST be in a calorie deficit.

Weight training is thrown into the mix for an added form of activity that burns calories and more importantly, for muscle maintenance. A caloric deficit will always lead to a loss of tissue, which consists of both muscle and fat. By having weight training as part of your program, it allows the tissue loss to stay more toward the fat side of things, opposed to the muscle side.

To build muscle, as a few of the posts elude to above, you must be in a caloric surplus. Muscle is an energy expensive tissue, and building new muscle on top of what you already have is an even more expensive process, energetically speaking. To support that kind of growth, you need to be eating above maintenance.

i can personally tell you it is more rewarding to lose fat first, you'll see results faster, and its easier to stay motivated, when training and eating to gain muscle it is likely to add on some fat, and on the other side of the coin it is likely to lose some muscle when cutting the fat. which is why body sculpters have a bulk phase and a cutting phase.

But i would say start where your desire is, your desire will keep you going through those rough spots.
