Facing Reality

I guess pretending that the weight problem is not that serious or that it will go away on its own is out of the question. I suppose when you hate taking pics anymore, and whenever you go somewhere, you're the one taking pics of your family and friends . . . something is wrong. I hate the way I look in pics. Unfortunately, for this public site, I am limited with my pics because of my religion. I will post some appropriate pics later, but my main concern is starting this weight loss journey. I viewed sooo many before and after pics. You all are such a great inspiration, but I honestly feel so lazy to stick to a program. What can I do to watch what I am eating and stick to an exercise program. HELP!!! I don't know where to begin . . . I need to realistically lose about 100 lbs. thank you for any advice you may have!

Take care,

Noor~

I'm just starting here as well, with about the same amount of weight loss as you. Right now I am aiming for about a loss of 95lbs. I also have a hard time getting motivated, my best suggestion is to count your calories, and check with a doctor as to what the best exercises for you are. There are plenty of people here who know what they are talking about, and can give great suggestions.

I'm still just learning as well, but I hope that you can get the motivation to lose that weight.

Good Luck!

Baby steps is all you can take. Don't bite off more than you can handle b/c chances are you'll just fall flat on your face.

In general, I'd suggest getting your mind 'right.' Figure out what motivates you to want to try this. What do you want in the end. Focus on the positives. Whatever you do, don't focus on the negatives. In other words, concentrate on what you want and NOT what you DON'T want.

Secondly, begin 'cleaning up' your diet. What kinds of foods do you currently eat? Where can you make improvements? Would counting calories be doable for you now? If so, check out . If not, simply cleaning up the diet will go a long way for starters.

Exercise: There's a billion different ways to approach this. Are you willing to start a regimented plan today? If not, simply becoming more active in general is a great starting place. Go for some walks, ride a bike, take the stairs, etc. Eventually you can work your way into a more structured program of aerobics and resistance training. Are you now or will you join a gym? Or, are you going to workout from home? If the latter, what equipment might you consider buying?

The bottom line is this. You have to start somewhere and the right place is the one that you'll be able to stick with consistently and build upon. Building up from something little is easy and motivating. Starting with too much makes things a lot tougher than they have to be. As long as you are progressively adding more, you'll improve.

I'm currently working with a woman who weighs 550+ lbs. If she can do it, trust me.... you can!

Hi Noor,
I am brand new to the site too, we sound alot alike. I too am the official photographer because I HATE to see a picture of myself. I would also like to loose at least 100lbs (although my first goal is 83). I found a great walking program for beginners on the mayo clinic website, you start off with about 5 mins a day. This works for me because I am really out of shape! Anyway signing onto this site is a giant step in the right direction for all of us. I am lazy too and I really hate not being able to eat what I want, BUT it's like you said--Time for a reality check. We can do it!!:rotflmao:

Thank you so much Marsh for your reply! It seems as though everyone genuinely cares about the success of everyone else and I really appreciate it. Good luck on your journey!

Thank you Steve for your reply! I think I got to the point now that I will focus on the immediate future so that it does not seem overwhelming. I did not get to my weight overnight, and I don't expect to lose it overnight (however, I definitely intend on losing it faster than I gained it)! :D Thanks so much for the advice!

Thank you for your reply! Missing out on so many pics feels like I really missed out on life. I know I have to stick this out because I am not getting any younger, and it is just going to be even harder later. I want to look cute like I used to . . . I don't think that's asking for too much! :D

Assalamu alaikum Sister Stephanie!

How are you? We "hijabis" have to stick together, huh? Where are you from?

Its funny that you mention the whole "taking picture thing" I knew that I had to lose some weight, when I was looking at pictures from my birthday and from a bbq i had with my friends. I was looking at the photo and i said to myself "OMG!! I cant believe i look like that!!" and right then and there I knew what i had to do! Also what i do to motivate my self, is I took a picture of myself in some clothes and when im working out at home i put the picture in front of me. I never ever want to look like how i do in the picture and i know that in a few months i will look totally different. Its weird, but it keeps me motivated!!

That sounds like a great idea! I will try that. It's funny how we look in the mirror every day, but it never shocks me like the photo does. Thank God that I am tall because no one even comes close to guessing my true weight. :)
